Weather forecast: Cloudy, rainy conditions to prevail

Weather today is cloudy and cold to very cold, particularly in the mountains, with sporadic rainfall, according to the Palestinian Meteorological Department (PMD).

Light to moderate westerly to southwesterly wind blows. Sea waves are low to medium.

Temperature in the capital, Jerusalem, and Bethlehem is expected to reach a high of 12°C and a low of 5°C and in Ramallah and Hebron a high of 11°C and a low of 4°C. In Jericho, the Dead Sea, and the Jordan Valley temperature is expected to reach a high of 21°C and a low of 11°C, while it is expected to reach a high of 17°C and a low of 11°C in Gaza and the coastal areas.

A low pressure is set to affect the region on Saturday, paving the way to cold to very cold conditions, particularly in the mountains, with scattered rainfall, possibly torrential, and a chance of isolated thunderstorms and hail.

Scores suffocate as Israeli forces crackdown on anti-settlement rally near Nablus

Israeli forces Friday afternoon cracked down on anti-land-pillage rallies in Beit Dajan village, east of the West Bank city of Nablus, causing scores to suffocate, according to WAFA correspondent.

Israeli forces used fatal violence to disperse a rally to defend Palestinian-owned land threatened with confiscation, east of the town, to make room for the construction of a colonial settlement outpost.

The soldiers showered protestors with concussion grenades and tear gas canisters and causing dozens to suffocate from excessive tear gas inhalation.

Palestinians across Historic Palestine have been rising up against decades of Israeli settler- colonialism and apartheid.

The number of settlers living in Jewish-only colonial settlements across occupied East Jerusalem and the West Bank in violation of international law has jumped to over 800,000 and colonial settlement expansion has tripled since the signing of Oslo Accords in 1993.

Israel’s nation-state law, passed in July 2018, enshrines Jewish supremacy, and states that building and strengthening the colonial settlements is a “national interest.”

169 US Jewish leaders express concern over conflation of antisemitism with criticism of Israel

A letter recently signed by 169 US Jewish leaders has expressed concern over the conflation of antisemitism with criticism of racist policies proposed by the new hardline Israeli government.

The letter calls for a critical and necessary debate about the hardcore Israeli government’s policies, warning against false accusations of antisemitism aimed at critics of Apartheid Israel.

“Those who employ accusations of antisemitism as a political weapon poison the debate. They weaken our ability to fight real antisemitism and effectively advocate for a strong US-Israel relationship,” read the letter.

“Accusations of antisemitism, however, must not be abused or misused. Indeed, it is profoundly irresponsible to conflate charges of antisemitism with criticism of Israeli policies, especially when antisemitism is on the rise in our country and elsewhere around the world”.

Israeli forces besiege Jericho for sixth consecutive day

Israeli forces today continued to besiege the occupied West Bank city of Jericho for the sixth consecutive day, according to local and security sources.

They said that the Israeli army set up checkpoints and cement barriers at the main and secondary entrances to the city, stopping vehicles and thoroughly checking every vehicle leaving the city as well as passengers’ ID cards.

This came as the army barged its way into the city and all the long way to the entrance of Aqabat Jaber refugee camp, southwest of the city, and showered young men at the entrance with volleys of tear gas canisters, without casualties.

Residents and travelers to Jordan, who have to go through Jericho to reach the Allenby/King Hussein/Karama bridge crossing, complain of long delays and thorough searches at the army checkpoints placed at all entrances to the tourist city.

The army imposed the siege last week following an attempted shooting at an Israeli restaurant outside the city after the army assumed that the alleged attacker has escaped to Jericho.

Palestinians have complained that after the attack, Israel has imposed collective punishment on the entire city, gravely harming it economically particularly during the high season considering that Jericho is a popular destination for internal and foreign tourism at this time due to its warm temperature during the winter season and the beauty of its terrain.

Three Palestinians injured in an attack by settlers near Bethlehem

Three Palestinians were injured today in an attack by Israeli settlers and army on a nonviolent tree-planting event in the town of Tuqu, to the southeast of Bethlehem, according to local sources.

Taysir Abu Mufarreh, director of the Tuqu Municipality, told WAFA that scores of army-guarded Israeli settlers physically assaulted and fired rubber-coated shots at local Palestinian activists who were taking part in the tree-planting event on a land near the town threatened with Israeli confiscation.

Abu Mufarreh added that the Israeli soldiers who were accompanying the settlers also attacked the local activists with pepper gas, causing three of them to suffocate. The three were moved to hospital for medical treatment.

Despite the Israeli attack, he added, the activists were able to plant forest trees on the land.

Occupation forces injure three Palestinians in Kafr Qaddum

At least three Palestinians were injured by Israeli occupation forces today during the weekly anti-colonization protest in the village of Kafr Qaddum, in the West Bank province of Qalqilia, local sources said.

Morad Shtewi, a local anti-occupation activist, told WAFA that Israeli occupation soldiers attacked the protesters with rubber-coated rounds and tear gas canisters, injuring three Palestinians by rubber-coated rounds and causing many cases of suffocation from gas inhalation.

The injured were treated at the scene of the confrontations.

For many years, villagers from Kafr Qaddum and neighboring villages have been holding weekly protests every Friday against illegal Israeli settlement construction.

More than 650,000 Israeli settlers live in Jewish-only settlements across the occupied Palestinian Territories in violation of international law.

Palestinian youth shot dead by Israeli forces near Nablus

A 25-year-old Palestinian young man was shot and killed on Friday evening by Israeli occupation forces at Huwwara military checkpoint, to the south of Nablus in the occupied West Bank, according to medical sources.

Ahmad Jibril, a spokesman for the Palestinian Red Crescent, said Abdullah Sami Qalalweh, a resident of the village of Al-Judeida in the Jenin province, died a few minutes after being critically injured by Israeli occupation soldiers at the checkpoint.

Qalalweh’s death brings up the death toll of Palestinians killed by Israeli occupation forces since the beginning of the year to 36, including 8 children and an elderly woman.

UN official: Measures taken by Israel only fuel further abuses of human rights

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk said today he was afraid recent measures being taken by the far-right Israeli government are only fuelling further violations and abuses of human rights law.

“I fear that recent measures being taken by the Government of Israel are only fuelling further violations and abuses of human rights law and violations of international humanitarian law,” Turk said in a press statement.

He added, “Last year saw record numbers of Palestinians killed in the occupied West Bank including East Jerusalem… Already this year, we have seen more bloodshed, more destruction, and the situation continues to grow more volatile”.

In 2022, the UN Human Rights Office documented 151 killings of Palestinians by Israeli occupation forces in the occupied West Bank, plus one boy who was killed by either the Israeli security forces or a settler. Another two Palestinians were killed by Israeli settlers.

So far this year, 32 Palestinians have already been killed in the occupied West Bank by Israeli occupation forces, with two more killed by settlers.

Turk continued, “Measures of collective punishment – including punitive forced evictions and house demolitions – are expressly prohibited under international humanitarian law and are incompatible with international human rights law provisions”.

He added that “plans by the Government of Israel to expedite and expand the licensing of firearms [for Israeli settlers]… can only lead to further violence and bloodshed.”

“We know from experience that the proliferation of firearms will lead to increased risks of killings and injuries of both Israelis and Palestinians. The Israeli authorities must work to reduce the availability of firearms in society,” the High Commissioner added.

The High Commissioner called for urgent measures to de-escalate tensions, including – crucially – ensuring that killings and serious injuries are investigated in accordance with international standards.

“Impunity has been rife, sending a signal that excesses are allowed,” he said. “The obligation under international human rights law is to investigate loss of life in any context of law enforcement – credibly and effectively – regardless of whether there was an exchange of fire between security forces and armed individuals.”
