4.1 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Northwest Iran

A 4.1 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale struck the city of Salmas, in the western province of Azerbaijan, northwest of Iran.

The National Seismological Center of the University of Tehran reported that the earthquake occurred last night at the confluence of the eastern longitude 44.8 and the northern latitude 38.38 degrees, and at a depth of 6 km.

No human casualties or damage were reported as a result of the tremor.

From time to time, Iran is exposed to various earthquakes, owing to the fact that it is located in a major contiguous region, the most violent of which hit the governorates of Jilan and Zanjan in 1990, when its strength reached 7.7 degrees, killing 37 and injuring 100,000.
