Ankara condemns Israeli attack on UNIFIL headquarters in Lebanon
The Turkish Foreign Ministry condemned the Israeli occupation army’s targeting of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in Naqoura area in southern Lebanon, and stressed that the international community is obligated to ensure Israel’s commitment to international law.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement: Israel’s attack on the UN forces, following its massacres against civilians in Gaza, the West Bank and Lebanon, is a manifestation of its belief that its crimes go unpunished.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry stressed in its statement that the international community is obligated to ensure Israel’s commitment to international law.
It pointed out that Turkey contributes one frigate to the UNIFIL Maritime Task Force, and has five personnel at UNIFIL headquarters, and that it will continue to support all initiatives within the framework of international law to promote peace in the region.
UNIFIL announced yesterday, Thursday, in a statement that an Israeli tank fired at a watchtower at its headquarters in the town of Naqoura, which resulted in the injury of two of its soldiers.
It added that Israeli soldiers deliberately opened fire on Wednesday and Thursday at one of its positions in the town of Labbouneh, and at one of its observation points in Ras al-Naqoura area in southern Lebanon, causing material damage.
UNIFIL stressed that “any deliberate attack on peacekeeping forces constitutes a serious violation of international humanitarian law and Security Council Resolution 1701.”
Since September 23, Israel has expanded the scope of the genocide it has been committing in Gaza since October 7, 2023, to include most of Lebanon, including the capital Beirut, through unprecedentedly violent and intense airstrikes. It also began a ground incursion into the south, disregarding international warnings and UN resolutions.
