GENEVA, The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor (Euro-Med) welcomed today the condemnation of the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention and UN experts of the Israeli authorities’ arrest of Jordanian citizen Hiba Labadi, and their call for her urgent release and ending the policy of illegal administrative detention.
Israeli security forces arrested Labadi, 32, at the Allenby/King Hussein/al-Karama Bridge border crossing on August 20 while she was travelling with her family to attend a wedding in Jenin. Following her arrest, she was subjected to 30 days of interrogation in the Petah Tikva interrogation center. During her interrogation, which sometimes extended to 20 hours a day, she was tied to a chair and placed in a painful position. Labadi, a Palestinian woman with Jordanian nationality, was placed in solitary confinement after an Israeli military court sentenced her to administrative detention without trial.
The Euro-Med said in a press release that it has launched an advocacy campaign to release Jordanian detainees in Israeli prisons, Hiba Labadi and Abdul Rahman Meri, including sending urgent letters addressing the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention and members of the Israeli relations committee in the European Parliament urging them to take action to release the detainees.
It said that UN experts’ call to release Labadi is an essential step to achieve justice and a clear sign to the Israeli authorities to stop their violations in the Palestinian territories especially with regards to the policy of administrative detention where civilians are detained for prolonged periods without indictments, evidences or trails.
The UN’s concerned agencies and the EU Parliament should exert pressure on the Israeli authorities to unconditionally release the two Jordanians and bring them back home immediately, Euro-Med noted.
The Israeli authorities are using administrative detention against Palestinian and Arab detainees as a tool of punishment and intimidation without any legal pretext in light of international silence over Israeli violations, it said.
