Four dead in attack on US convoy in southeastern Nigeria

Nigerian police has announced that gunmen attacked an American convoy in Ogbaru district in Anambra state, southeast of Abuja, killing four non-Americans and kidnapping three others.

Nigerian police spokesman Ikenga Tochukwu confirmed, according to al-Mayadeen, that there were “no US citizens in the convoy,” adding that gunmen killed two officers of the police mobile force and two US consular staff before setting fire to their vehicles.

Tochukwu explained that the members of the joint security forces were deployed at the scene, but the gunmen were able to kidnap two police officers and a driver, stressing in a statement that a rescue operation was taking place on Tuesday evening.

For his part, John Kirby, a spokesman for the National Security Council at the White House, confirmed the attack at a press conference in Washington.

Kirby said that “an American convoy consisting of a number of vehicles was attacked,” and confirmed what Tochukwu said that the attack “did not affect any American citizen.”

In turn, the US State Department indicated that Washington’s diplomatic staff in Nigeria is working with the Nigerian security services to conduct investigations.
