Israel demolishes school east of Bethlehem

Israeli Occupation forces demolished early Sunday, Al-Tahadi School 5 located east of Bethlehem, where 66 students diligently study.

Chair of the Colonization and Wall Resistance Commission in Bethlehem Hassan Brejieh stated the occupation forces with their military vehicles stormed the town and began destroying the brick and tin building, only a few hours before the beginning of the school day.

He told Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) that forces assaulted the families who stood in defiance of the demolishing; they shot at them with rubber bullets, as well as fired sonic and gas bombs.

Breijeh added that tents will be put in place to resume the scheduled school year.

Furthermore, the commission explained that occupation courts repeatedly rejected petitions of terminating the demolition.

The commission condemned the act saying that it goes against the most basic laws, and called on the world to hold occupation accountable for its continuous crimes.

As per the instruction of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, the commission asserted that it will rebuild the school and continue to build all that the occupation destroys.

The Education Ministry also denounced the destruction of the school saying that it strips the children of the right to free safe and independent education.

The Ministry labeled this as a heinous crime and part of a series of many crimes targeting the educational system, and paying no heed to international charters, calling on international humanitarian organizations to take a stance against these escalating infringements.

It affirmed that it will do what it takes to make education available and accessible to all, to instilling a sense of determination in schoolchildren.

Al-Tahadi schools were established in occupation-controlled lands, to ensure the right of education to the children of Bedouin communities who had to walk long distances to get to the nearest school.

Israeli occupation forces prohibit the building of schools in these areas; therefore, Al-Tahadi schools are made of brick and portable tin homes.
