Mother of alleged attackers among 33 detained from West Bank

RAMALLAH, Israeli forces Tuesday detained the mother of two alleged Palestinian attackers along with 32 other Palestinians in multiple overnight raids across the West Bank, said Palestine Prisoner’s Society (PPS).

Israeli forces detained Suheir al-Barghouti, whose sons allegedly carried out two attacks in last December, during a raid that triggered violent clashes in Kobar and Abu Shkheidim villages, northwest of Ramallah.

Suheir’s son, Assem, is currently detained by Israel for being suspected of carrying out an attack, killing two Israeli soldiers on December 13, one day after his brother, Saleh, was reportedly shot and killed by Israeli forces north of Ramallah.

PPS added that 11 others were detained from the Ramallah and al-Bireh district, mostly from Kobar and Abu Skheidim villages, including Suheir’s brothers, Zahi and Samer, and a 17-year-old disabled teen.

The raid triggered clashes during which Israeli soldiers opened fire at youth villagers who protested the raid, injuring a protestor with a rubber-coated steel bullet in the head and another with a live round in the leg. Both casualties were rushed for a hospital.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces detained five Palestinians from Ash-Sheikh Sa’d village, south of Jerusalem.

In Bethlehem district, Israeli military vehicles raided Beit Fajjar town, south of Bethlehem, where soldiers detained two 16-year-old Palestinian teens.

PPS confirmed in a statement that another 16-year-old Palestinian teen was rounded up from Bethlehem district.

In Hebron district, an Israeli military raid was conducted in Idhna town, west of Hebron, resulting in the detention of two Palestinian brothers and ransacking of several houses.

In the northern West Bank, PPS confirmed that at least a Palestinian was detained from Nablus district.

This came as security sources confirmed similar military raids in the Nablus city neighborhood of Ras al-Ein and Rujeib village, south of Nablus, during which soldiers ransacked several houses and seized mobile phones and jewelry.

In Tulkarem district, Israeli forces detained four Palestinians as confirmed in the PPS statement.

Two others were detained in similar military raids from Tubas district, while still three others were detained from Yaabad town, southwest of Jenin city.

Israeli forces frequently raid Palestinian houses almost on a daily basis across the West Bank on the pretext of searching for wanted Palestinians, triggering clashes with residents.

These raids, which take place also in areas under the full control of the Palestinian Authority, are conducted with no need for a search warrant, whenever and wherever the military chooses in keeping with its sweeping arbitrary powers.
