RAMALLAH, The funeral of Saeb Erekat, secretary-general of the Palestine Liberation Organization who died on Tuesday after contracting coronavirus, was highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida’s main front-page story headline said: “With the participation of the president: the funeral of the fighter Erekat started from the presidential headquarters before being buried in Jericho.”
It said President Mahmoud Abbas received a number of letters of condolences in Erekat.
Al-Ayyam daily main story headline written on black background said: Prominent official and popular farewell for Erekat before being buried in Jericho.”
The third daily, al-Quds, with also on black background, said: “Official and popular funeral for Palestine’s loss Saeb Erekat.”
The second half of the front page of al-Quds daily included obituary boxes of condolences in Erekat.
The other main front-page topic covered by Al-Hayat al-Jadida had to do with marking the 16th anniversary of the death of Yasser Arafat and the events in this regard in the occupied territories.
The top front-page story in al-Quds daily said that as US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo starts tomorrow a tour of the Gulf states and Israel, there is concern that outgoing US President Donald Trump may launch “a military adventure” to entrap the new Biden administration and distract attention from his defeat.
The paper also reported on the death of the Palestinian prisoner in Israel, Kamal Abu Waar, who died of cancer while in prison, and said that his family is demanding to release his body in order to bury him.
Al-Ayyam said the Israeli occupation has “legalized” 1700 settlement units in the West Bank.
It said the Israeli municipality of West Jerusalem has demolished a building under construction in al-Tur neighborhood of occupied East Jerusalem.
It said Israel is banning residents of Jerusalem and the Palestinians in Israel from entering the West Bank for one month under the coronavirus pretext.
Coronavirus cases at home and abroad were also covered in all three papers.
