Newspapers review: Signing of Emirati, Bahraini agreements with Israel

RAMALLAH, The signing ceremony of the Emirate and Bahraini normalization agreements with Israel at the White House besides to Palestinian and regional reactions to it dominated the front page headlines in Wednesday’s issue of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies.
Al-Quds said against a black background that the official US-brokered UAE-Israeli and Bahraini-Israeli normalization agreements were signed at the White House.
Covering the theme against a black background, al-Ayyam said that UAE and Bahrain signed their “disgraceful” agreements with Israel.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida said that UAE and Bahrain “slipped into the swap” of normalization and described the signing ceremony as a “black day”.
The dailies highlighted the rallies denouncing the normalization agreements in the occupied Palestinian territories as well as abroad.
Al-Quds said that protests were held across Palestine denunciation of the agreements amid a prevailing feeling of rage and betrayal.
The Palestinian leadership was reported in the dailies stressing that: “Peace, security and stability will not be achieved in the region until the Israeli occupation ends.”
It was also reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida reiterating that no one has the authorization to speak on behalf of the Palestinian people or the PLO.”
Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said that hundreds of Palestinians and pro-Palestinians rallied against the normalization agreements close to the White House.
Presidential spokesperson Nabil Abu Rudeineh was reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida stating that the upcoming steps to be taken by the leadership would be based on the unified Palestinian position.
Al-Quds said that President Abbas received a phone call from Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and Islamic Jihad chief Saleh Arouri, while al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said he received a call from Haniyeh.
He was reported in the dailies reiterating his support for all efforts aimed at reinforcing the unified Palestinian position.
According to al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida, Abbas is set to deliver two important speeches before the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) during the next week.
The Health Ministry was reported in the dailies announcing that 888 new coronavirus infections were recorded in the occupied territories (the West Bank and Gaza) in the last 24 hours.
Al-Quds added in this regard that three fatalities were recorded in occupied territories, while al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said that six fatalities were recorded.
Highlighting ongoing home demolitions, al-Quds said that two Palestinian families were forced to demolish their houses in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Jabal al-Mukabbir.
Al-Ayyam said in this regard that six families were forced to tear down their own houses in Jerusalem.
According to al-Ayyam, scores of Israeli settlers forced their way into Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque compound amid calls for a large-scale settler intrusion into the site on Thursday.
It added that dozens of Palestinians suffocated as Israeli forces showered them with tear gas canisters in Hebron city.
Al-Ayyam said that an Israeli court ruled in favor of the forceful eviction of the Palestinian family of Salah from their house in Silwan to make room for Elad settler group.
Highlighting the findings of the latest PSR public opinion poll, al-Quds reported the Palestinian Center for Policy & Survey Research (PSR) showing that the overwhelming majority of the Palestinian views the UAE-Israeli normalization agreement as “one that serves only the interests of Israel.”
It also quoted the report showing that Palestinians were still interested in ending the Israeli occupation and securing the refugees’ right to return to their homes and towns from which they were forcefully displaced in 1948.
Regionally, Qatar was reported in al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida ruling out the possibility of normalizing relations with Israel before solving the Palestinian question.
Member of the Bahraini Anti-Normalization Committee Hassan Marzouqi was reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida saying that a series of steps will be taken to counter his country’s decision to normalize ties with the Israeli occupation.
