RAMALLAH, Thursday, May 13, 2021 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas today stressed the need to end the Israeli onslaught on Gaza and the forced expulsions of Palestinians from the Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah.
Speaking in a phone call with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron, President Abbas briefed Macron on the recent developments in the occupied territories, with focus on the besieged Gaza Strip and the Sheikh Jarrah.
He emphasized the need to halt the ongoing Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip, Israeli occupation authorities’ and settler attacks against the Palestinian people and property, including encroachments upon holy sites in the occupied city of Jerusalem, in addition to the forced displacements of Palestinians from their houses in Sheikh Jarrah.
He stressed the importance for France, the European Union, and the Quartet to play a pivotal role in order to create a political horizon based on the United Nations resolutions and international law and hold an international peace that ensures bringing the Israeli occupation to an end and establishing the independent Palestinian state, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Macron pointed that his country was sparing no effort in cooperation with relevant actors to “de-escalate tensions” and immediate action to reach ‘ceasefire’.
Meanwhile, President Abbas on Wednesday received a phone call from US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
During the phone call, President Abbas stressed the need to halt the Israeli onslaught on Gaza together with unbridled settler attacks and the occupation authorities’ aggressive actions.
He also called for the promotion of a political horizon to reach a political solution to the Palestinian question based on the United Nations resolutions and international law in a manner conducive to ending the Israeli occupation and helping the Palestinian people gain their freedom and independence.
Blinken emphasized “the need to de-escalate tensions and bring the current violence to an end”, while pointing that his country was exerting efforts with all concerned parties to reach a ‘ceasefire’.
