RAMALLAH, Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Angela Merkel today congratulated President Mahmoud Abbas on his 84th birthday.
Putin described President Abbas in his telegram as a wise and skilled political figure, who enjoys high respect in the region and beyond, and has dedicated his life to the service of the Palestinian people and struggle to the Palestinian legitimate rights, as well as a faithful friend who strives to promote constructive Palestinian-Russian cooperation.
Putin stated that hopes are pinned on Abbas for sustaining dialogue and joint action to revitalize and intensify the mutually beneficial Palestinian-Russian relations as well as for reaching the comprehensive settlement and firm peace in the Middle East based on the two-state solution.
Merkel, in her telegram, said that President Abbas has been working for the Palestinian people’s interests and for peacemaking.
She added that the Federal German government shares Abbas the goal of building a democratic, independent and economically prosperous Palestinian state. In order to attain such a goal, she argued, there is a need to pursue the Palestinian-Israeli peace process to ensure the success of the negotiated two-state solution in order to bring stability and peace.
