BEIRUT, An official of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) says the agency only has enough funds to operate until the end of September.
“I presented a report on the financial situation of UNRWA following the United States’ decision to stop financing our agency, a decision that will have a definite impact on the various services we offer to Palestinian refugees,” said Claudio Cordone, the director of UNRWA affairs in Lebanon, on Monday.
Cordone made the remarks during his meeting with Bahia Hariri, a Lebanese member of parliament.
He also informed the MP that certain countries had pledged to give financial support to make up for the shortfall caused by the U.S. decision.
The school year has already started in the schools operated by the UNRWA, and the agency is determined to maintain its educational services no matter what happens, Cordone said.
The United States announced earlier this month that it would stop contributing to the UNRWA, describing the UN refugee agency as it is “irreparably flawed”.
Several countries, including France, Switzerland and Britain, have agreed to increase their donations to the UNRWA.
