Ambassador Hajar meets UN Humanitarian Coordinator & UNICEF Representative in Yemen

The Adviser to the President of the Supreme Political Council for Diplomatic Affairs – Head of the High-level Technical Committee concerned with following up on the implementation of the Child Protection Action Plan, Ambassador Abd al-Ilah Hajar, met on Thursday with the co-chairs of the United Nations Country Task Force – United Nations Resident Coordinator William David Gresley, and the United Nations Children’s Fund Resident Representative UNICEF in Yemen, Peter James Hawkins.

During the meeting, progress in the implementation of the Plan of Action for the Protection of Children was discussed.

During the meeting, Ambassador Stone reaffirmed the National Rescue Government’s commitment to implementing the Child Protection Action Plan signed between the Government and the United Nations in April 2022 and its activities and programmes for the protection of children.

It reviewed progress in the implementation of the Action Plan over the past period.

Gresley and Hawkins commended the progress made in the implementation of the Plan of Action and reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to providing all possible support in this regard.

The meeting was attended by the Deputy Head of the Foreign Minister’s Office, Ambassador Waheed Abdulwahab Al-Shami.

Jordan announced regional destination for health tourism-Qaisi

World Tourism Organization (WTO) approved Jordan as a regional center and destination for medical and hospital tourism in the Middle East region, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Makram Qaisi, announced. The announcement was made at the inauguration of the 49th meeting of the UNWTO Regional Commission for the Middle East on Thursday, in the Dead Sea region, in the presence of the organization’ president, Zurab Pololikashvili. During the opening ceremony, Qaisi said Jordan’s achievement is a “certificate of pride and a medal”, in recognition of the Kingdom’s “solid” position on the map of the region and the world, lauding WTO’s efforts. Qaisi reviewed privileges that contributed to Jordan’s accreditation as a regional destination for medical tourism, primarily availability of “highly” qualified workers in the specialties of medicine, nursing and pharmacy. He also noted number of Jordan’s physicians stood at some 30,000 with “distinguished” academic education and training from the “best” universities, hospitals and international centers. Qaisi said the Kingdom has the world’s “highest” rate of physicians per capita, which reached about 26.6 medical doctors per 10,000 people in 2021, and this percentage exceeds the global average of 17.2 doctors per 10,000 individuals. He added that this fact also applies to the nursing staff, as the number of nurses was about 35.2 per 10,000 people in Jordan in 2021, which is “significantly higher” than the global average of 28.7 per 10,000 individuals. Highlighting Jordan’s “distinguished” infrastructure, he noted : “The Kingdom has an advanced medical infrastructure, including hospitals and specialized medical centers, that operate according to the highest international standards and enjoy international accreditation.” Jordan, he said, is “distinguished” by providing “low cost” medical treatment compared to multiple countries in the world, and excels in its quality services, adding that its health insurance systems are run according to the best professional standards and its “strict” means of monitoring seek to maintain level of medical care for tourists.

US provides USD 53.7 mln additional humanitarian assistance for Haiti

The US is providing USD 53.7 million in additional humanitarian assistance for the people of Haiti, the US Agency for International Development (USAID) announced Thursday.

USAID, in a statement, said the funding will “help partners provide urgently needed humanitarian assistance, including vital food assistance, as 4.9 million people face acute food insecurity amid the crisis.” It added, “These funds will provide support care for survivors of gender-based violence and other protection services for the most vulnerable, as well as access to safe drinking water and health care.

“Haiti continues to face alarming insecurity, including gang violence, attacks on civilians, and looting, which have exacerbated food insecurity and protection needs and impeded deliveries of life-saving humanitarian assistance,” the statement stressed.

It further noted that with the additional USD 53.7 million, USAID will have provided over USD 110 million in “life-saving humanitarian assistance to Haiti in Fiscal Year 2023.” It affirmed that the US “will continue to stand with Haitians during this challenging time, working to save lives and alleviate suffering caused by the humanitarian crisis”.

Biden directs prompt response to Canadian wildfires

US President Joe Biden on Thursday directed prompt response to Canadian wildfires “This morning, millions of Americans are experiencing the effects of smoke resulting from devastating wildfires burning in Canada, another stark reminder of the impacts of climate change,” read a statement.

Al-Sudani discusses with an international banking delegation supporting the banking sector, the central bank and the private sector

The Prime Minister, Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani, discussed today, Thursday, with a delegation from the JP Morgan Bank, which included the bank’s Deputy Director, Daniel Zeliko, and the Director of the bank’s group for the public sector, in the Middle East, Ghali Laraki, support for the banking sector, the Central Bank of Iraq, and the private sector.

A statement by Al-Sudani’s office stated that international trade, risk management and expansion of non-oil revenues were discussed, which is one of the most important priorities of the government, which it is working on as part of its plans for financial and administrative reform.

The Prime Minister referred to the role of JPMorgan Bank in establishing the Trade Bank of Iraq (TBI), which is today the commercial banking window of Iraq to the world, stressing that Iraq is on the verge of a large reconstruction movement in all sectors.

Al-Sudani stressed: His government welcomes the opening of branches of the bank in Iraq, and is fully prepared to provide support to international banks in Iraq because it represents the basis of the banking system that provides guarantees to investors, foremost among which is the JP Morgan Bank, calling for the continuation of support provided to the Central Bank of Iraq and the development of the Industrial Bank to be qualified for development and investment, as happened previously with the Trade Bank of Iraq.

Al-Sudani stressed: that the government is continuing to reform the banking system in Iraq, whether it is related to the public or private sector, correcting the movement of funds and supporting global trade as well as supporting the private sector and stopping money laundering operations by complying with international standards and improving them, indicating: The government has set a budget for three Years, and it is happening for the first time, and that this budget will support the private sector through the Iraqi Fund for Development, or through agricultural and industrial projects in it./ End

Finance Ministry: The budget law falls under the exclusive responsibility of Parliament

The Ministry of Finance confirmed that the budget law falls under the responsibility of Parliament exclusively, and that it is not concerned with making amendments to the law.

The Ministry stated in a statement: It is clear to the Ministry that some MPs, during their visits to the Ministry, raised narrow and limited issues that do not reflect a real desire for the national interest, and are thus far from the topics that are being talked about and raised to the media, which is a manifestation of gaining sympathy of the public and the illusion of public opinion about issues that have nothing to do with reality.

It expressed its astonishment at the statements spread on social media by some MPs who make them after their visits to the Ministry by claiming to raise a group of important national issues, especially discussions related to budget items to achieve the public interest.

In its statement, the Ministry affirmed that it is not responsible for the inaccurate information and statements issued by some MPs after the end of the visits to the Ministry, in addition to that it is not concerned with making amendments to the budget law because the project is currently exclusively under the responsibility of the House of Representatives.

The Minister of Transport hands the Lebanese side an invitation to attend the Development Road Conference next week

Minister of Transport, Razzaq Muhibis Al-Saadawi, announced today, Thursday, that he had handed over to the Lebanese side an invitation by Prime Minister Mohamed Shiaa Al-Sudani to attend the meeting of the technical committees of the Development Road Conference, to be held in Baghdad next week.

Al-Saadawi said in a statement: Our visit to Lebanon came to discuss several issues, foremost of which is cooperation in the field of air, land and sea transport, and to discuss agreements and memorandums of understanding signed between Iraq and Lebanon.

He added: It was agreed on the necessity of activating these agreements that benefit both countries, pointing out: There are many commonalities between Iraq and Lebanon to enhance cooperation.

For his part, the Lebanese Minister of Transport, Ali Hamiyeh, affirmed: Lebanon is now within the Iraqi transit system for trucks to enter through Iraq towards the Gulf countries, thanking Iraq for inviting Lebanon to participate in the planning and design of the development road project./ End

The Head of the Iraqi Journalists Syndicate, Head of the Union of Arab Journalists, Muayad Al-Lami, called on Iraqi satellite channels, and with it Al-Arabiya, through its offices in Iraq, to invest in the visit of the Chief Editors of Arab and foreign newspapers and institutions to Iraq to participate in the celebrations of the National Day of the Iraqi press, through media coverage and press interviews to highlight what Iraq is currently witnessing in terms of urban renaissance and intensive campaigns to develop the service and economic reality.

The Head of the Journalists Syndicate reviewed the Syndicate’s preparations and its program to celebrate the 154th anniversary of the Iraqi National Journalism Day, which will be attended by a number of Arab and Foreign Ministers of Culture and Information, and personalities representing major media institutions from more than 50 countries around the world. The Permanent Office and the General Secretariat of the Union of Arab Journalists in conjunction with these celebrations.

During the meeting, a number of proposals that would improve the journalistic and media reality in Iraq were discussed, including developing the technical and professional skills of young journalists through the establishment of training courses and workshops.

Colleagues, directors of satellite channels and directors of offices of agencies operating in Iraq, expressed their readiness to fully cooperate with the Journalists Syndicate in implementing its festive program through media coverage and highlighting all the festive events, reflecting the active role of the press family as a partner in the political and economic stability and urban advancement in various fields in Iraq at all levels.

Achievement of the first process of taking rock cores in the eastern oilfield of southern Baghdad

The technical and engineering staff of the Iraqi Drilling Company completed the first coring operation in a field east of southern Baghdad in one of the wells of the Hartha Formation.

The Ministry said in a statement: The Chinese company EBS, “the operator of the field,” stated that, through the study of the oil and gas evidence of rock core samples that were extracted with high accuracy and reached 100%, indicating that this achievement will help achieve great results in developing the field, increasing production and expanding the work area, North of the field, up to the production target set by the Ministry of Oil.

The rock core is defined as: it is the pieces of rock resulting from the drilling of oil wells, whether exploratory or developmental, within a specific field./ End
