Dozens suffocate as Israeli forces attack funeral procession in southern West Bank

Dozens today suffocated as Israeli forces attacked a funeral procession in Beit Ummar town, north of the occupied West Bank city of Hebron, according to an activist. Mohammad Awad said that the heavily-armed soldiers sealed off the main entrance of the southern West Bank town as a funeral procession was approaching the entrance on its way to a local cemetery in Asida area, triggering confrontations. The soldiers showered the mourners and the pallbearers with volleys of tear gas canisters, causing dozens to suffocate and injuring two by rubber-coated steel bullets, one in the foot and the other in the lower back. Israeli severely restricts Palestinians’ freedom of movement within the occupied West Bank through a complex combination of approximately 500 fixed checkpoints, hundreds of flying checkpoints, settler-only roads, over 200 military bases and various other physical obstructions. Closures besides to other measures, taken under the guise of security, are intended to entrench Israel’s 56-year-old military occupation of the West Bank and its settler colonial project which it enforces with routine and frequently deadly violence against Palestinians.

Arab-American Institute: Israel does not meet statutory requirements laid out for every other country that has joined Visa Waiver Program

The Arab-American Institute said Israel does not meet the statutory requirements laid out for every other country that has joined the Visa Waiver Program (VWP)because of its well-documented discriminatory treatment of Arab Americans, particularly Palestinian Americans, and Americans advocating for Palestinian human rights. “In order to join the VWP, a country must guarantee that any American visiting will be treated without discrimination by the country’s authorities. There is overwhelming evidence that Israel fails to meet this standard of reciprocity, with clear and documented cases of Arab Americans routinely facing hours of harsh interrogation, searches of electronic devices, and in some cases, strip searches when traveling through Israeli ports of entry. In other examples, they are simply denied entry,” said the Arab-American Institute in a statement. The statement appealed to sign on to Congressman Jonathan Jackson’s letter, which raises concerns about Israel’s eligibility for the Visa Waiver Program.

Oil prices Fall on Friday

Oil prices fell in early Asian trading on Friday.

Brent crude futures fell 36 cents, or 0.5%, to $75.60 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude fell 33 cents, or 0.5%, to $70.96 a barrel.

The two benchmarks fell about a dollar yesterday, Thursday, compensating for some of their losses, which earlier exceeded three dollars, after Washington and Tehran denied the validity of a report by the Middle East Eye website stating that they were close to reaching a nuclear agreement.

For the week, the two benchmarks are on track to incur a loss of about 1% and towards a second week of losses.

Oil prices rose earlier in the week after Saudi Arabia pledged large production cuts, but the gains were pared by an increase in US fuel inventories and weak Chinese export data.

On Thursday, the United States and Iran denied a report that they were close to an interim agreement under which Tehran would halt its nuclear program in return for sanctions relief, including allowing it to export up to 1 million barrels of oil per day.
