His Majesty King Abdullah on Monday checked on the phosphate hills rehabilitation project in Ruseifa, launched in 2021. King Abdullah listened to a briefing by acting prime minister, Deputy Prime Minister and Local Administration Minister Tawfiq Kreishan, who heads the follow-up committee on the phosphate hills rehabilitation project. Kreishan said the project includes rehabilitating 1,700 dunums as part of efforts to address ecological challenges in the area, noting that work targeted areas with high pollution levels, and rehabilitation efforts included creating a public park, building a wall to protect the rehabilitated area, planting trees around the park, and revamping the livestock market. For his part, Jordan Phosphate Mines Company (JPMC) Chairman Mohammad Thneibat said the cost of the project reached JD35 million. Thneibat said the phosphate hills rehabilitation project in Ruseifa is the biggest ecological project that addresses environmental issues resulting from mining, adding that the JPMC invested in the rehabilitation project through carburising and shipping 2.3 tonnes of phosphate. Amman Mayor Yousef Shawarbeh gave a briefing on the Greater Amman Municipality’s efforts on the first phase, which included preparing 240 out of 600 dunums to cultivate them over phases, with 25 dunums of these lands now planted with trees. His Majesty also inaugurated the Ruseifa ecological park, which includes 15,000 trees extending on an area of 76 dunums, and surrounded by additional 100 dunums planted with nearly 3,000 trees on a land owned by the Environment Ministry. The King visited facilities at the park, which was built at cost of JD2.5 million as part of the phosphate hills rehabilitation project, and called for developing a plan to utilise other rehabilitated land to better serve Ruseifa residents. Turkiye denounces new Israeli settlement activities in W. Bank

The Turkish Foreign Ministry on Tuesday condemned the Israeli government over a recent decision to build around 5,700 new settlement units in the occupied West Bank.

“We condemn the Israeli government’s approval of building approximately 5,700 new (settlement) units in the occupied (Palestinian) West Bank,” the ministry said in a press statement.

“It is obvious that, breaking a new record by exceeding 13,000 units since the beginning of the year, the illegal settlements seriously damage the ground for the two-state solution and the perspective of lasting peace,” it added.

The ministry also called on Israel to immediately halt all settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territories, which violate international law.

Groups call on US football teams not to sports wash apartheid Israel, to cancel planned friendly games

The Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement and the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) called on US football teams not to sports wash Israel’s apartheid and to cancel all friendly games planned with Israeli teams. Citing the Israeli army killing of Palestinian footballer, Omar Qatin, in the West Bank on June 22, as well as Israeli soldiers regularly raiding Palestinian football matches, even children’s matches, firing tear gas, sound bombs, and rubber-coated steel bullets onto the pitch, the Israel Football Association governing and working hand-in-hand with the Israeli government to maintain teams in illegal Israeli settlements on stolen Palestinian land, which constitute a war crime under international law, and the institutionalized racism among Israeli football fans promoted by the Israeli government, BDS and PACBI stressed that accepting to play exhibition matches with teams representing Israeli apartheid sports washes Israel’s racism, crimes against humanity, and war crimes. ‘Leading human rights organizations such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have found Israel guilty of the crime against humanity of apartheid,’ they said. ‘There is no separating sports and Israel’s violations of Palestinian rights,’ in reference to friendly matches planned between Orlando Pirates FC and AFC Bournemouth with Israeli teams. ‘We urge any other team considering such a match to refuse to sports wash Israeli apartheid. There’s nothing ‘friendly’ about playing football with teams representing apartheid Israel. As Palestinians living under the violent and deadly brutality of Israeli oppression, we call on Orlando Pirates FC and AFC Bournemouth to cancel ‘friendly’ matches with Maccabi Tel Aviv in Spain, July 13 and 16.’
