China urges US to honor commitments with concrete actions

China urged on Thursday the US to stop making irresponsible comments and honor its commitments with concrete actions, following a recent media report about US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s remarks, state-run Xinhua News Agency reported.

“China is dissatisfied with the comments made by Secretary Blinken,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning told a news briefing in Beijing.

“The US pursues a misconceived China policy which stems from a misguided China perception, seeks to block, contain and suppress China and has been attacking and smearing China’s image to interfere in China’s internal affairs,” said Mao.

According to the report, Blinken said in a recent interview that it is no secret that there are differences between the US and China.

He also said the US will continue to stand for its interests, stand up for its values and continue to do things and say things that China doesn’t like.

“I would like to stress again that mutual respect is the basic principle for countries dealing with each other and an essential ingredient for China and the US to find the right way to get along,” the spokeswoman added.

British PM: Gov’t to appeal against court decision, will take it to Supreme Court

The British government will seek to appeal against a court decision which rules that plans to send asylum seekers to Rwanda are unlawful, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said Thursday.

In a press release, Sunak said he “fundamentally disagrees” with the ruling and said the government will challenge it in the Supreme Court.

The charity which brought the challenge welcomed the ruling.

A spokesperson for Asylum Aid said the decision was a “vindication of the importance of the rule of law and basic fairness”.

Meanwhile, Sunak said that while he respects the court’s decision he will do “whatever is necessary” to disrupt criminal gangs operating small boat crossings.

He said: “I strongly believe the Rwandan government has provided the assurances necessary to ensure there is no real risk that asylum-seekers relocated under the Rwanda policy would be wrongly returned to third countries, something that the Lord Chief Justice agrees with.

“Rwanda is a safe country, the High Court agreed. The UNHCR have their own refugee scheme for Libyan refugees in Rwanda.

We will now seek permission to appeal this decision to the Supreme Court,” Sunak added.

The case was brought by 10 people from countries including Syria, Iraq and Albania, who arrived in the UK in small boats, alongside Asylum Aid, who argued the policy was unlawful.

The decision on whether Rwanda could be deemed a safe third country for asylum seekers to have their claims processed is partly based on whether there is a risk that people could be forced back to the country from where they were originally fleeing.

Jordan summons Sweden’s envoy over permission to burn Quran

Jordan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates said Thursday it summoned Swedish Ambassador in Amman to convey Jordan’s firm protest against the Swedish government’s permission to burn a copy of Holy Quran in Stockholm last Wednesday.

In a statement, the ministry condemned the burning of Quran, saying that burning a copy of the Holy Quran represents dangerous hate and a manifestation of Islamophobia that incites violence Such acts cannot be regarded as an exercise of freedom of expression, it said.

The ministry renewed its rejection to, and condemnation of, these acts, which are regarded as a ‘crime and provocation of feelings’ of more than two billion Muslims, according to the statement.

The ministry stressed the need of halting such ‘provocative and abusive’ acts, which represent one of the most heinous forms of hatred.

The ministry further called for respecting religious symbols, promoting a culture of peace and acceptance, and increasing awareness of the values of mutual respect, it noted.

Authorities in Sweden allowed an extremist to stage a protest and burn a copy of the Quran in front of a mosque in Stockholm.

Arab League underlines importance of tropics regions

The Arab League underlined the importance of tropics regions of the Earth, which represents 80 percent of the biological diversity in the world and in turn considered to be a natural treasure for all humanity. A statement by the League, marking The International Day of the Tropics, noted that these regions do face various challenges, such as climate change, deforestation, logging, urbanization and demographic changes.

The League noted that the International Day of the Tropics celebrates the extraordinary diversity of the tropics while highlighting unique challenges and opportunities nations of the Tropics face.

It provides an opportunity to take stock of progress across the tropics, to share tropical stories and expertise and to acknowledge the diversity and potential of the region.

The Tropics are a region of the Earth, roughly defined as the area between the tropic of Cancer and the tropic of Capricorn.

Although topography and other factors contribute to climatic variation, tropical locations are typically warm and experience little seasonal change in day-to-day temperature.

An important feature of the Tropics is the prevalence of rain in the moist inner regions near the equator, and that the seasonality of rainfall increases with the distance from the equator.
