Despite the truce.. 10 martyrs and dozens injured in an Israeli bombing of Gaza

Gaza – Together – 10 citizens were martyred, including an infant, and dozens were injured, on Sunday, in an Israeli army bombing that targeted two homes in the Bureij camp, the Al-Mawasi area, the Shujaiya neighborhood, and Beit Hanoun.

The occupation aircraft bombed a house for the Al-Khatib family in the Bureij refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip, killing 5 citizens, including an infant, and wounding others.

The occupation bombed a house for the Al-Najjar family in Al-Bureij camp, which led to the death of two citizens and the injury of others.

The Israeli war machine blew up residential buildings in the Al-Mughraqa area in the central Gaza Strip, by bombing them with warplanes and artillery.

A citizen was also martyred in an Israeli bombing that targeted the Al-Mawasi area, north of Rafah, south of the Gaza Strip.

Israeli aircraft bombed a gathering of citizens in the Shujaiya neighborhood, east of Gaza City, leading to the death of a citizen and the injury of others.

Local sources reported that a
citizen was martyred and another was injured when an Israeli drone targeted the roof of the Ghazi Shawa School, which houses thousands of displaced people in Beit Hanoun, northern Gaza Strip.

The bombing comes despite the Israeli army announcing, on Sunday, that it would stop fighting throughout the daylight hours along the southern Gaza route, to relieve the accumulation of humanitarian aid heading to desperate Palestinians who are suffering from a severe humanitarian crisis.

The “tactical truce” announced by the army, which applies to about 12 kilometers of roads in the Rafah area, falls far short of the complete ceasefire in the besieged area sought by the international community, including Israel’s biggest ally, the United States.

The army said that the truce will begin at eight in the morning and will remain in effect until seven in the evening, local time, and added that the pauses will occur daily until further notice.

He explained that “the truce aims to allow aid trucks to reach the nearby Israel
i-controlled Kerem Shalom crossing, which is the main entry point for incoming aid, and to travel safely to the Salah al-Din Highway, a major north-south road.”

Will Zurich Conference Succeed in Laying Foundations for Peace in Ukraine amid Russia’s Absence?

Doha: June 15 – A two-day high-level conference on peace in Ukraine kicked off in Zurich, aiming to pave the way for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.

More than 80 countries have confirmed their participation in the conference, half of which are from Europe, and the State of Qatar is participating with a delegation headed by HE Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani.

The ‘peace summit in Ukraine’ is not a negotiation forum but rather a high-level summit aimed at creating a basis for future negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.

The summit, which Switzerland announced on April 10 that it had met the necessary conditions for holding it, will address three main topics: nuclear safety, food security, and freedom of navigation, in addition to humanitarian aspects such as protecting civilians and exchanging prisoners of war.

The summit comes in response to a request made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Swiss President Viola Amherd in
January to organize an international peace summit with the aim of ending the ongoing war in Ukraine since February 2022.

The Swiss Foreign Ministry said the summit would build on discussions held in recent months such as the Ukrainian peace formula and other peace proposals based on the UN Charter and the basic principles of international law, and it will provide a platform for dialogue on ways to achieve comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine on the basis of international law and the UN Charter, promote a common understanding of a framework that would enable this goal to be achieved, and jointly define a roadmap on how to engage the parties in the future peace process.

Despite the importance of the summit and the diversity of its participants, Russia’s absence and opposition to it may make it difficult to predict the results it will achieve and whether it will actually succeed in laying the foundations for peace in Ukraine.

Russia had confirmed more than once its readiness to negotiate with Ukra
ine but argued that any conference or summit that does not take Moscow’s security concerns into account will not have tangible results on the ground.

On June 7, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that his country will win in Ukraine, but he said that it is also ready to negotiate and that any possible negotiations between the two countries must be based on the new reality.

During the plenary session at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Putin said that all armed conflicts end one way or another with some kind of negotiations .. He added: “These agreements can be based on either military defeat or victory. We strive for and will achieve victory.” He stressed that Russia wants to negotiate with Ukraine but according to the conditions discussed in Minsk and Istanbul.

China also announced that it will not participate in the summit in light of Russia’s absence, but stressed that this does not mean that Beijing does not support peace.

The West regards China as an ally of Russia, especially sinc
e it is among the few countries in the world that has not expressed its condemnation of the war in Ukraine.

In February 2023, China announced an initiative to resolve the crisis between Russia and Ukraine peacefully, stressing the need to resume direct dialogue between the two countries as soon as possible, with full respect for the sovereignty of all countries. Equal and uniform application of international law should be promoted, while double standards must be rejected. But, it did not receive the desired international response. Last May, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that China could arrange a peace conference in which both Moscow and Kyiv would participate.

Lavrov added that his country agrees with China’s position that the root causes of the conflict need to be addressed and legal interests of all parties need to be protected, with subsequent agreements based on the principle of equal and indivisible security.

Qatar’s participation in the summit comes as a result of its leading regional
and international role in resolving disputes through mediation, with Qatar continuously calling for dialogue, negotiations, and a commitment to international charters and treaties. Doha has been and continues to be a main negotiation hub where warring and disputing states and/or parties come together under a single roof to negotiate for peaceful resolutions, in an effort to promote international security and peace, with the country achieving success in numerous cases, something for which it received global praise. As part of its efforts to resolve the crisis in Ukraine and mitigate its humanitarian and social repercussions, Qatar launched an initiative to reunite Ukrainian children with their families back in Ukraine, in cases where families got separated by the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, with Qatar coordinating with both Ukraine and Russia for that end. The result of which was that Qatar succeeded in reuniting Ukrainian children with their families in four operations, hosting approximately 20 families reuni
ted from both sides (Russian and Ukrainian) last April, providing them with comprehensive medical, psychological, and social support, meeting the families’ immediate and long-term needs, facilitating their stable recovery and reintegration. Qatar’s success in the family reunion initiative is proof of the country’s reception as a reliable global player which strives for peace, security, and stability. In April, Qatar announced its commitment to provide USD 3 million to the Office of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights to support its core work in Ukraine, with this funding enabling a range of key initiatives, including the appointment of monitoring experts and the establishment and support of regional offices throughout Ukraine, in addition to enhancing the necessary infrastructure to deliver effective services aimed at supporting families and children affected by the ongoing conflict. Qatar’s humanitarian efforts are an extension of its state policy of promoting the resolution of conflicts t
hrough mediation and peaceful means, in a reflection of its permanent commitment to the principles of international law, international solidarity, and its contributions to peace and stability regionally and internationally. Moreover, the State of Qatar has recently participated in the Ukraine Recovery Conference (URC2024) held in Berlin, Germany, on 11 and 12 June, 2024, in which it mobilized international support for the reconstruction of Ukraine, providing urgent aid, implementing rapid recovery projects, attracting investment, and actively participating in social and economic recovery, especially in education, healthcare, and social services. Indeed, since the beginning of the Russian-Ukrainian war, Qatar has maintained a balanced foreign policy, engaging with both sides and repeatedly calling for dialogue as means to end the conflict, while providing maximum assistance to war-affected children and families. The State of Qatar spares no effort to achieve regional and international security and peace, worki
ng in all directions to bring stability to the region, something that is evident in Qatar’s active and effective diplomacy with all partners.

Gaza – Together – The head of the Hamas political bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, said, ‘Our response to the ceasefire proposal is consistent with the foundations contained in Biden’s speech and the Security Council resolution.’

He said: ‘Hamas and all the resistance factions showed great seriousness and great flexibility in order to reach an agreement that would spare the blood of our people and stop the aggression, and our response to the ceasefire proposal is consistent with the foundations stated in Biden’s speech and the Security Council resolution, and the occupation continues its attempts to circumvent and deceive with the aim of obtaining prisoners and resuming “War of extermination.”

Haniyeh said, “Another holiday has passed for Palestine, and Gaza is struggling against the occupying invaders on all fronts. We are in the midst of a historical epic in which we defend our land, our identity, and our sanctity.”

Haniyeh stressed in his speech today, Sunday: ‘Our people are living under a stifling siege and th
e most extreme types of suffering, from displacement to displacement and from bombing to bombing. Gaza is struggling for the rest of the world, and this year’s Eid comes in light of the enormous sacrifices. Our people are living in a journey of suffering that history has never known before. This Today is a blessed day with crowds of worshipers on the ruins of mosques in Gaza and in Al-Aqsa Mosque, despite the oppression and barriers.’

He added: “My first message is directed to the people of Gaza, who are facing aggression and fighting the battle steadfastly. We are certain of victory, liberation and empowerment, and that the occupation that is committing genocide has failed to achieve its goals.”

He stressed: “The occupation will see from our people nothing but steadfastness, steadfastness, resistance, and more rootedness and belonging.”

He added: My people in the Gaza Strip have offered and are still offering everything precious and valuable and they bear all kinds of pain with steadfastness and patience,

The head of Hamas’s political bureau said: “The Al-Aqsa flood was a historic battle with evidence and results that cannot be comprehended. We see the helplessness of the enemy leaders. He continued: “We say to the Islamic Resistance Brigades in Iraq that you confirm that our enemy is one and that our nation is one.”

Haniyeh praised “the declared position of all parties supporting and allied with Palestine.”

He added: “The occupation has intensified the war of extermination that it is leading against our people in Gaza, the West Bank and Jerusalem.”

He continued: “The occupation continues its bombing, killing and destruction, especially in pa
tient Gaza, and our people in Gaza are facing famine just as they are facing the bombs of the occupation.”

He noted, “The nation must play its role in this eternal battle. It is time for our nation to develop its support and escalate its confrontation with the occupation.”

He added: “Everyone must move to force the occupation to open all crossings and bring in all the needs of our people immediately and urgently, and everyone must move to force the enemy to open the Rafah crossing.”
