Palestine records 512 coronavirus cases, 15 deaths

Minister of Health Mai Alkaila said today that 512 new COVID-19 infections, 15 deaths and 1,117 recoveries were registered in Palestine during the past 24 hours.

In her daily report on the coronavirus pandemic, Alkaila said six deaths were reported in the West Bank and nine others in the Gaza Strip. She said no updates were available regarding the situation in occupied Jerusalem.

In the West Bank, 279 coronavirus tests came out positive, while 233 new cases were registered in the Gaza Strip.

The health minister said 142 patients of coronavirus remain under intensive care, of whom 39 are on ventilators. In addition, 358 patients are receiving treatment at hospitals and COVID-19 dispensaries.

Alkaila pointed out that the recovery rate in Palestine has so far reached 93.1 percent, while active cases declined to 5.8 percent. Deaths stood at 1.1 percent of total infections.

Concerning rollout of vaccines, the health minister said over 257,800 people have received their first jab of the vaccine in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, of whom 185,000 received both doses.

Minister: International community must intervene to stop Israel’s expulsion of Palestinians in Shakih Jarrah

PA’s Jerusalem Affairs Minister Fadi al-Hadami called on the international community to promptly intervene and take immediate actions to stop Israel’s expulsion of Palestinians from their homes in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in occupied East Jerusalem.

He slammed what is happening in Sheikh Jarrah as a crime that violates all international laws and which requires urgent intervention by the international community, stressing that Palestinian residents of Shaikh Jarrah are facing an ethnic cleansing campaign carried out by the Israeli government in favor of Israeli settlers.

He said that the Israeli government disregards international law and insists on facilitating settlement schemes that aim at the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians to replace them with settlers.

Shtayyeh calls on Europe to pressure Israel to allow holding of elections in Jerusalem

Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyeh said that the elections were postponed, and not canceled, calling on Europe to continue its efforts to pressure Israel to allow elections to be held in Jerusalem and to allow Palestinians there to participate in the elections through casting their votes and running as electoral candidates.

This came during a meeting held today with the representative of the European Union (EU) to Palestine, Sven Kühn von Burgsdorff, in the premier’s office in Ramallah.

Shtayyeh praised the EU’s position in support of holding elections in all Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem, and the EU promotion of the values of justice, peace, and democratization, and supporting the right of the Palestinian people to establish their independent state.

They also discussed efforts made to establish a desalination plant in the Gaza Strip at a value of 600 million dollars, of which the EU will contribute 150 million euros, and the Europe-Qatar-funded gas pipeline project that aims at alleviating the electricity crisis in the Strip.
