Palestinian killed by Israeli police in Jerusalem’s Old City

A Palestinian identified as Mohammad Khaled al-Osaibi, 26, from the town of Houra in the Naqab desert in the south of Israel, was shot and killed by Israeli police around midnight while he was near Chain Gate, one of the gates leading into Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem’s Old City, according to Israeli reports. Police claimed Osaibi, who graduated from a medical school in Romania and recently passed an exam to practice medicine in Israel, attempted to snatch a weapon from a border guard when he was shot and killed. However, witnesses said the police killed Osaibi in cold blood and from a very short distance after he intervened to help a Palestinian woman who was being assaulted by the police and forced to leave Al-Aqsa Mosque. Ayman Odeh, a member of the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, and former Knesset member Talab al-Saneh refuted the Israeli allegations about Osaibi attempting to snatch the gun of a policeman, a justification the police gave to kill him. Odeh said Osaibi went to pray at al-Aqsa Mosque in this holy month, and that just because he wanted to help a woman who was being assaulted by the police, he was ‘executed’ despite the fact he was unarmed ‘Everyone must understand that the occupation is the major continuous crime, and our issues will not end until it ends. All efforts must be directed to ending it,’ he said. Saneh also said Osaibi tried to intervene when he saw the police attacking an Arab woman, and so she was killed from a very short distance. ‘The police claim that he tried to snatch someone’s weapon is a lie and a fabrication,” he said, calling on the police to show the videotapes from the cameras in the area documenting the alleged attempt to snatch a weapon from a policeman. The police shut down all the gates to Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Old City following the incident and attacked shopkeepers and vendors in the area. The gates were later reopened. With the killing of Osaibi, the Israeli occupation forces have shot and killed 88 Palestinians since the start of the year, almost all of them from the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Presidency says Israeli escalation in Al-Aqsa Mosque could lead to an explosion in the situation

The Palestinian presidency said early this morning that the Israeli escalation in Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem’s Old City, one of the holiest Muslim sites, could lead to an explosion in the situation on the ground. The official presidential spokesman, Nabil Abu Rudeineh, warned in a statement against what he described as ‘the dangerous escalation’ by the Israeli occupation authorities last night at Al-Aqsa Mosque and the police assault on people in the Old City of Jerusalem. ‘This fabricated Israeli escalation aims mainly to escalate tensions and drag matters into the square of violence during the holy month (of Ramadan), particularly after the large numbers of people who congregated to the holy Al-Aqsa Mosque to perform the Friday prayer,’ he said. Abu Rudeineh held the Israeli occupation authorities responsible for these provocations, and called on everyone, especially the US administration, to intervene and put pressure on the occupation government to stop its crimes and attacks before it is too late. Around 250,000 people attended the second Friday of Ramadan prayer at Al-Aqsa Mosque, arriving from all over the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem and from inside Israel. Meanwhile, Israeli police shot and killed a Palestinian man from Israel around midnight at one of the gates leading to Al-Aqsa Mosque, which increased tension in the holy city.

Patriarchs and heads of churches in Jerusalem call on Israel to secure religious freedom of Christians in Easter

In their annual Easter message, the patriarchs and heads of churches in Jerusalem called on Israel to secure safety, access and religious freedom for Christians in the Holy Land during Easter. ‘As we have all seen in recent months, escalating violence has engulfed the Holy Land. Local Christians in particular have increasingly suffered adversities,’ they said. ‘For over the past year, some of our churches, funeral processions, and places of public gathering have become targets of attack; some of our holy sites and cemeteries have been desecrated; and some of our ancient liturgies, such as the Palm Sunday Procession and the Holy Fire Ceremony, have been closed off to thousands of worshipers. This is in spite of our agreements to cooperate with the governing (Israeli) authorities, and to accommodate any reasonable requests that they might present,’ said the church leaders in their message making reference to scores of attacks by Jewish fanatics against churches and Christians in Jerusalem. ‘While we will persevere in these good-faith efforts, we ask the overseeing officials to work cooperatively and collaboratively with us, even as we call upon international community and local residents of goodwill to advocate on our behalf, in order to help secure the safety, access, and religious freedom of the resident Christian community and the millions of Christian pilgrims annually visiting the Holy Land-as well as the maintenance of the religious Status Quo,’ added the church leaders.

Palestinians in Israel to observe one-day strike in protest of police brutality

The High Follow-Up Committee for Arab Citizens in the 1948-Occupied Lands announced today that a one-day general strike will be observed across the Arab towns and cities in Israel tomorrow, Sunday, in protest of the cold-blooded murder last night by Israeli police of a Palestinian citizen of Israel in the Old City of Jerusalem. Mohammad Khaled al-Osaibi, 26, from the town of Hura in the Naqab desert, was shot and killed in cold blood by Israeli police around midnight while he was near Chain Gate, one of the gates leading into Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem’s Old City. The Israeli police refused to publish CCTV footage documenting the lunching of al-Osaibi, although the police claimed that he was shot dead after trying to snatch a police officer’s rifles, a claim that was dismissed by eyewitnesses. The High Follow-Up Committee said at an emergency meeting in Hura that the strike will include all the municipalities and educational facilities in the Arab cities and towns in Israel. The Committee also called for massive turnout to the funeral of the slain Palestinian young man at his hometown of Hura, and called for rallies and vigils to be held in the Arab towns to express resentment at the Israeli forces’ use of lethal force against the defenseless Arab population. Arabs in today’s Israel are Palestinians who stayed on their land following the creation of the occupying state in 1948 and their descendants. They make up about 20 percent of the country’s nine million people. By law, their rights are equal to those of Jewish citizens. But in practice they suffer discrimination in employment, housing, policing and other essentials
