The spokesman for the Russian presidency, the “Kremlin”, Dmitry Peskov, announced that the Russian authorities intends to drop the criminal case against the commander of the “Wagner” private military group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, stressing that the latter “will leave for Belarus.”
He explained that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Belarusian Alexander Lukashenko agreed on Minsk’s mediation in the settlement process, pointing out that the mediation “was a personal initiative by the President of Belarus.”
He added that Lukashenko’s efforts were based on avoiding bloodshed and internal confrontation.
Peskov revealed the most important points of agreement between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, within the framework of Minsk’s mediation to end the Wagner Group rebellion that Russia experienced throughout Saturday, as the agreement stipulated that some of the group’s fighters, who refused from the beginning to engage with Prigozhin, would have the possibility to join the Russian Armed Forces and contract with the Ministry of Defense and will not be subject to any legal prosecution.
The agreement also provided for the return of Wagner forces to their camps, and the part that does not wish to return to headquarters and camps signs agreements with the Russian Ministry of Defense.
According to the agreement, the criminal case against Prigozhin will be suspended and he will leave for Belarus.
Peskov concluded by stressing that what happened on Saturday will in no way affect the course of the special military operation in Ukraine, stressing that the Russian forces continue to successfully repel the Ukrainian counterattack.
For its part, the “Russia Today” news channel confirmed that the soldiers of the (Wagner) group had started leaving the headquarters of the Southern Military District in Rostov-on-Don.
