Eight residents were seriously injured in an apartment fire in the German capital Berlin, including two residents in critical condition.

Firefighters announced Tuesday that the fire took place on the first floor of a six-story apartment building.

According to the Berlin fire brigade, two residents jumped out of the burning apartment and injured themselves life-threateningly before the firefighters arrived.

The fire also spread to the apartments above and two people were rescued from the second floor after suffering serious injuries, and four others were seriously injured and were rescued from the stairs.

145 firefighters participated in the firefighting and rescue operations.

The extinguishing work continues and it is not yet the cause of the fire.

On April 12, in the town of Uberlingen, southwestern Germany, a fire broke out which resulted in severe damage to many nearby buildings without causing human injuries.
