Newspaper Review: Dailies highlight President Abbas’s remarks in a meeting with US delegation

Remarks made by President Mahmoud Abbas during a meeting yesterday with a visiting US delegation headed by the Assistant Secretary of State for Near East Affairs Barbara Leaf made headlines today in the three Palestinian Arabic-language dailies.

Al-Ayyam said in the main headline: “President [Abbas] receives a US delegation: We will not accept the occupation to last further and we will not compromise on our national principles.”

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said in its main story: “President [Abbas]: Now is the time for the [Israeli] occupation to leave, and we will not compromise on our national principles.”

Al-Quds also highlighted: “President [Abbas] to a US delegation: East Jerusalem is our capital.”

On a different subject, the three dailies said Samih Jamal Amarneh, 37, a Palestinian man who was injured a few days ago by Israeli army gunfire in the town of Ya’bad in the north of the West Bank, died yesterday of his wounds at a hospital in Ramallah.

Al-Ayyam said Israeli occupation forces dispersed nonviolent anti-occupation protests in the occupied West Bank towns of Tarqumia and Kafr Qaddum, while Israeli settlers set large tracts of Palestinian agricultural land on fire in the village of Burin.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida and Al-Ayyam said members of Al-Rajabi family in the occupied Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan celebrated yesterday their daughter’s wedding on the rubble of their home, which was razed to the ground by the Israeli occupation forces on May 10.

Al-Quds and Al-Hayat al-Jadida Countercurrents, an India-based analysis website, has published a reported titled “Apartheid Israel leads the world for killing journalists.”
