Palestine today welcomed the adoption by the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) of a draft resolution on the human rights situation in the occupied territories.
The Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ministry welcomed in a press statement the adoption of the UNHRC in its 52nd session Draft Resolution A/HRC/52/L.43 on the human rights situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and the obligation to ensure accountability and justice.
The Ministry thanked 38 UNHRC member states that voted in favor of the draft resolution and considered their vote as reflecting their position in support of exposing Israel’s regime of settler-colonialism and apartheid and holding it accountable.
Thirty eight member states voted in favor of the draft resolution, two others, namely Malawi and the United States of America, voted against it and seven other abstained.
The Ministry regarded international consensus on exposing Israeli settler-colonialism and voting in favor of Palestine at this critical juncture as a form of rejection of the crimes perpetrated by Israeli occupation forces and settlers under a fascist government as well as a mechanism that would deter Israel, the occupying power, from proceeding with such crimes and help safeguard the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people towards ending Israel’s regime of settler-colonialism and apartheid.
It urged UNHRC member states that voted in favor of the draft resolution to translate their vote into tangible steps in line with their responsibilities in terms of ensuring Israeli perpetrators of war crimes and crimes against humanity are held accountable and remedy is provided to Palestinian victims.
