The Basra government discusses with UNICEF the initiative to nominate Basra as a “child-friendly city”

Today, Tuesday, the local government in Basra discussed with the UNICEF the nomination of Basra as a “child-friendly city”, and the organization’s initiative project to generalize this initiative and launch it to include the rest of the governorates of Iraq.

A statement by the office of the First Deputy Governor of Basra, Eng. Muhammad Taher Al-Tamimi, stated that he met a delegation from the United Nations headed by the new director of UNICEF in the southern region, Najib Allah Hama, to document, strengthen and maintain work ties and follow up on the projects it is implementing in Basra.

Al-Tamimi said, “The local government of Basra is supportive of UNICEF projects in Basra, especially projects related to child development, support and protection,” indicating that it “has adopted the launch of the first project in the world in the field of supporting the education sector, which is the governmental international schools project, and the number of these schools in Basra has so far reached (40) schools, and we are working to increase their number next year to (50) government schools with international standards spread in the center, districts and sub-districts of Basra.

Al-Tamimi stressed that “this scientific project will serve poor and middle-income families by 85%, and it is a nucleus and great wealth for the creation of the future generation.”

For his part, the director of UNICEF in the southern region praised the work of the local government, especially what it is doing to support children, noting that “the international schools project adopted by the Basra government is one of the important projects to support children in the province.”

He explained that “UNICEF nominated Basra for the initiative of the “Child Friendly City” project, stressing that “this project will be launched to include the rest of Iraq’s governorates.” End
