Turkey-Syria earthquakes: Death toll rises to more than 33,000

The number of people who have been killed in the massive earthquakes that struck Turkey and Syria has risen to more than 30,000, according to official sources.

The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) said that the earthquake, registered with a magnitude of 7.8 on the Richter scale, killed 29,605 people in southern Turkey, while 3574 people were killed in Syria.

UN relief chief Martin Griffiths said that he expects the death toll to at least double.
