UNRWA Chief recalls unresolved plight of Palestine refugees

Philippe Lazzarini, the Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), said today that the 75-year anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 2023 will also mark 75 years of displacement for millions of Palestine refugees and their descendants.

“Many of them [Palestinian refugees and their descendants] live without human rights protections in the absence of a just and lasting solution to their plight, to which they are entitled,” Lazzarini said in a press statement.

Lazzarini pointed out that protection remains part of the core UNRWA mandate, alongside the assistance and services it provides to Palestine refugees and their descendants in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip. ?

“The Universal Declaration of Human Rights remains as relevant as ever to Palestine refugees in its demand that human rights protections be extended to all, including the most vulnerable. Palestine refugees should not have to wait another 75 years to enjoy dignity, basic human rights and justice,” said the Commissioner-General.

Settlers attack homes of Palestinians in Hebron’s Tel Rumeida

Israeli settler fanatics tonight attacked Palestinians’ homes in Tel Rumeida in the old city of Hebron, south of the occupied West Bank, according to local sources. No injuries were reported.

Witnesses told WAFA that rampaging settlers physically assaulted and pepper-sprayed Palestinians in the neighborhood in full watch of the Israeli occupation army, which did nothing to stop the attack.

The city of Hebron is home to roughly 200,000 Palestinians and about 800 notoriously aggressive Israeli settlers who live in colonial compounds in the heart of the city, heavily guarded by Israeli troops.

Israel has expelled the only international monitors protecting Hebron’s Palestinians from the 800 heavily guarded settlers, one of whom committed the 1994 massacre that triggered their deployment.

Settler violence against Palestinians and their property is routine in the West Bank and is rarely prosecuted by the Israeli occupation authorities.

Occupation forces detain 11 Palestinians in West Bank

Israeli occupation forces arrested 11 Palestinians last night during raids in the occupied West Bank districts of Hebron, Jenin, and Ramallah, according to local sources.

In Hebron province, south of the West Bank, an Israeli occupation army force stormed Al-Arrub refugee camp and arrested five local residents, including two brothers, Samed and Ammar Jawabra.

In Jenin province, north of the West Bank, the Israeli occupation forces raided the town of Burqin and also arrested two brothers, Tareq and Nabil Abu Shadouf, after raiding their homes.

Two more Palestinians were arrested by the Israeli occupation forces during a simultaneous raid on the nearby town of Ya’bad.

In Ramallah, in the center of the West Bank, forces stormed the town of Birzeit and arrested two Palestinians.

Almost on a daily basis, Israeli occupation forces carry out raids targeting populated Palestinian communities for arrests or searches. The practice, mostly carried out at nighttime, has become a routine under Israeli military regime.
