Five Palestinians assaulted by Israeli forces in Tubas

TUBAS: Five Palestinians were Thursday morning injured after being beaten by Israeli occupation forces in Tubas, sources confirmed.

The Red Crescent Society said that its crews dealt with five citizens who sustained injuries after occupation forces beat them during a raid on citizens’ homes in Tubas.

The same sources added that the occupation forces obstructed the work of the Red Crescent crews and prevented them from moving.

Last night, large forces from the occupation army stormed the city of Tubas and the town of Tammoun, and launched a massive detention campaign among citizens.

OIC condemns Israel’s approval of 3,500 colonial units in West Bank

JEDDAH: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) condemned on Thursday the ongoing of the Israeli colonial settlement policy in the occupied Palestinian territory, the latest of which was the approval of the construction of about 3,500 new colonial units.

The organization affirmed, in a statement, that Israeli colonists are invalid, illegitimate and unlawful, under international law, the Geneva Conventions and relevant United Nations resolutions, including UN Security Council Resolution No. 2334.

It called on the international community to assume its responsibilities in putting an end to all crimes and violations committed by the Israeli occupation throughout the occupied Palestinian territory, including the city of Jerusalem.

Saudi Arabia slams Israel’s approval of new colonial units in West Bank

RIYADH: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia strongly condemned the Israeli occupation’s decision to approve the construction of approximately 3,500 new settlement units in the occupied West Bank, the Foreign Ministry said, as reported by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

The Kingdom also condemned the attempt to annex wide areas of the West Bank, including Al-Quds (Jerusalem), which violates all international resolutions, international human-rights law, and United Nations resolutions, and obstructs the opportunities for peace and stability in the region.

Additionally, the Kingdom reiterated the importance of ending the suffering and providing hope for the Palestinian people, enabling them to secure their rights to live safely, and establishing their Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with the Arab Peace Initiative and relevant international resolutions.

EU denounces Israel’s plans for more West Bank colonial units

RAMALLAH: The European Union (EU) has expressed its strong disapproval of Israeli government’s decision to construct over 3,426 new colonial units in the West Bank colonies, which are considered illegal by international law.

This came in a statement that urged Israel to reverse these decisions, saying: ‘The EU reaffirms that the settlements are unlawful and undermine peace as they jeopardize the two-state solution. Furthermore, the settlement expansion is incompatible with the ongoing efforts to ease tensions, and this situation will affect the upcoming Ramadan, which is very significant before the religious festivals of Pesach and Easter.’

The statement also stressed that the EU’s stance remains the same: ‘We will not acknowledge any alterations to the pre-1967 borders, including Jerusalem, unless they are agreed by the parties.’

UN aid coordinator warns of ‘serious acute malnutrition’ in Gaza

RAMALLAH: The UN’s humanitarian coordinator ad interim for the Occupied Palestinian Territory James McGoldrick warned Wednesday of ‘serious acute malnutrition” in northern parts of Gaza.

“I do believe that conditions that people face in the north — lack of access to clean water and sanitation, lack of adequate health care and lack of food supplies on a regular basis — especially target some of the people who are the most vulnerable,” said McGoldrick, speaking to reporters virtually after a two-day visit to Gaza.

In response to a question from Anadolu Agency on the rising death toll from hunger in Gaza amid Israel’s siege of the enclave, McGoldrick said he has seen various reports of emaciated children in Gaza, including a 14-day-old infant who died from starvation.

“I think it’s quite predictable to see that there will be really serious acute malnutrition in these areas,” he added.

Deaths due to starvation were also noted in McGoldrick’s report, but also in the reports of the United Nations Children’s F
und (UNICEF) and other UN organizations.

McGoldrick further emphasized that there are a lot of preventable deaths.

On US officials’ emphasis on the need to achieve a cease-fire in Gaza before the start of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan later this month, he said: “Your point on Ramadan was well taken. In a camp, I met yesterday with a woman who stressed how unhappy and concerned they were that they were unable to celebrate Ramadan properly.”

“I think it’s something that will cause a real degree of consternation, shall we say, for families throughout (the enclave), and so many if not all families in Gaza will struggle to celebrate Ramadan in any normal way,” he added.

McGoldrick emphasized that there are “enormous and growing needs for over 2.3 million people living in appalling conditions.”

While preparing for a cease-fire on one hand, he said that on the other hand, the people of Gaza also need to plan what they would do in the event of a military operation against Rafah.

He noted that chronic dise
ases are becoming more prevalent, the health care system is collapsing and the lack of clean water and hygiene poses a significant problem.

“We have to fix things so much in the context of Gaza for women, for children, for vulnerable groups, the disabled and others,” he said, while warning of “catastrophic levels” of hunger in northern parts of Gaza.

“We have to get up to at least 300 trucks a day. Right now, we’re lucky if we’re getting about 150,” he said.

Asked about the difference that humanitarian aid via airdrops make, McGoldrick said they do help, but they are “no alternative to food trucks, to road transport. We’re talking about bulk requirements.”

Noting that aid trucks provide approximately 10 times more assistance compared to airdrops, he emphasized that aid trucks directly reach those in need.

McGoldrick further pointed out that some of the airdropped aid ends up in the sea and some is seized by the powerful instead of reaching those who truly need it.

Wennesland condemns Israel’s advancement of plans for 3,400 housing units for colonists

JERUSALEM: UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Tor Wennesland, has condemned the advancement by the Israeli occupation authorities of plans for over 3,400 housing units for Israeli colonists in the occupied West Bank.

“Israel’s settlement expansion continues to be a driver of conflict in the occupied West Bank, further entrenching the occupation and undermining the right of Palestinians to self-determination and independent statehood,” said the UN official in a press statement.

He concluded, “I reiterate that all settlements are illegal under international law, and I urge Israeli authorities to cease all settlement activity and refrain from provocative actions.”
