An Arab-European meeting in the Saudi capital to discuss recognition of Palestine

A joint Arab-European meeting was held today, Monday, in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, to support the recognition of the State of Palestine and the adoption of the two-state solution.

The official Saudi Al-Ikhbariya channel reported that the meeting, in which Ministers from twenty countries participated, came after a six-party Arab meeting attended by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, also in Riyadh, on the sidelines of his current visit.

The Channel said: The Arab-European coordination meeting was launched in the presence of 20 countries, with the aim of supporting efforts for a two-state solution, recognition of the State of Palestine, and a ceasefire in Gaza.

Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan said in his speech at the meeting: ‘We renew our commitment to finding a final solution to this conflict and recognizing the State of Palestine, and we want to support efforts for a two-state solution,’ warning that ‘the possible Israeli invasion of Rafah will lead to a humanitarian catastrophe.’

For his
part, Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide said at the meeting: ‘We are aware of the brutality of what is happening in Gaza, and it is very important to discuss the immediate ceasefire process and work to deliver aid as well as the two-state solution.’

Earlier today, Monday, a six-party Arab meeting, chaired by Saudi Arabia, in Riyadh, discussed the importance of a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and taking an ‘irreversible step’ regarding the two-state solution, in the presence of the foreign ministers of Egypt, Jordan, the UAE, and Qatar, and a representative of Palestine, with Blinken’s participation.

Last Tuesday, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry announced a new Arab movement to support recognition of Palestine in the United Nations General Assembly, during a press conference with Irish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Defense Mihwa Martin.

For his part, the Irish Foreign Minister said, ‘There are many countries with similar rationality in the European Union, and they
are working to recognize the State of Palestine and stop the violence in the Gaza Strip.’

Blinken: US backs Gaza truce

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said on Monday that Washington supports enforcement of a truce in Gaza and releasing the prisoners.

Blinken, speaking during the joint GCC-US ministerial meeting, said the US observed tangible progress “in the humanitarian condition in Gaza over the past few weeks.” However, the effective avenue to taper off the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is through reaching a cease-fire, he said, adding that the US has dedicated great concern for sending aid to Gaza while seeking to avert expansion of the war.

The US Secretary of State re-affirmed necessity of tackling the issue of navigation via the Red Sea and confronting the attacks by the Houthis, acknowledging that the targeting of the ships there has affected the global economy.

Blinken arrived in the kingdom earlier today starting a regional tour aimed at enforcing a ceasefire in Gaza, sending more aid into the strip and participating in the GCC-US ministerial meeting to discuss plans for enhancing security in the Gulf.

MP: This is the reason for delaying the election of the Speaker of Parliament

Al-Jubouri said in a statement to the National Iraqi News Agency (NINA): ‘The Sunni political blocs’ lack of agreement to present a single candidate is the reason for delaying the election of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, given that each bloc presented a candidate for the position.’

He explained that: ‘After the Federal Court’s decision to consider the first session to elect the Speaker of the House of Representatives valid, no new candidates were presented for the position, and therefore only the five candidates will enter the competition.’

Arab League: Gaza crisis end linked to Israeli occupation forces withdrawal

The plight of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip would end only when Israeli occupation forces withdraw from the enclave, paving the way for Palestinian statehood, the chief of the Arab League said on Monday.

The two-state solution to the Middle East conflict can come to fruition with “international determination,” which includes the recognition of an independent Palestinian state based on 1967 border lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital, the chief of the Cario-based bloc’s Palestinian affairs department Dr. Saeed Abuali told the Arab Peace Group, on behalf of the Arab League secretary general.

The aforementioned matter has the backing of the “vast majority” of nations who have demonstrated their support in a plethora of initiatives ranging from international gatherings to local protests, all of which call for an end to the “mass genocide” committed by Israeli occupation forces against the Palestinians, the official underlined.

He lashed out at Israeli occupation forces for their “systemic acts of violenc
e,” across the West Bank and Gaza, which include the forced displacement of Palestinians there, in addition to other malpractices that are tantamount to “ethnic cleansing,” he added.

On a recent US veto of a United Nations draft (UN) resolution that blocked a Palestinian bid for statehood through UN membership, the official lamented the move as a dangerous precedent that seriously undermines any chances of peace in the Middle East, while giving credit to the 12 countries that voted in favor of the resolution.

The official decried the harrowing toll of the war on the Gaza Strip, citing that more than 120,000 Palestinians were left either dead or wounded amid the destruction, while thousands of others are still trapped underneath the rubble, according to UN statistics.

He went on to highlight the growing significance of the media, in addition to global humanitarian organizations in exposing “Israeli crimes,” while simultaneously ratcheting up pressure on the international community in a bid to put an end to
the violence.
