US: “significant progress” on cessation of hostilities deal in Ethiopia

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken welcomed on Tuesday what he described as “significant progress” on the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (COHA) between the Government of Ethiopia and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), signed two months ago.

In a press release, Blinken said, “today marks six months since the signing of the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (COHA) between the Government of Ethiopia and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) in Pretoria on November 2, 2022, which ended two years of conflict in northern Ethiopia and began a process of peace and recovery that continues today.” The success of this African Union (AU)-led process, in which the United States participated as an observer, is a tribute to the AU’s campaign to “Silence the Guns” and to AU Commission Chairperson Faki’s leadership as well as the extraordinary efforts of the AU’s High-Level Panel, the statement said.

“The United States commends the parties for the significant progress on COHA implementation, which has led to the restoration of essential services, flow of humanitarian aid, TPLF turnover of heavy weapons, release of detainees, the initiation of a comprehensive and inclusive transitional justice process, and establishment of an interim regional administration in the Tigray Region,” the statement added.

“The United States urges continued follow-through, including by deploying additional monitors for the protection of civilians and conducting an effective disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration process.

The complete withdrawal of Eritrean and non-federal forces from the Tigray Region and a credible transitional justice process, including accountability for those responsible for human rights violations and abuses, will be key to achieving sustainable peace in northern Ethiopia,” the statement noted.

“The successful peace process in northern Ethiopia highlights the opportunity to bring peace to the Oromia Region as well.

The United States welcomes the beginning of talks in Tanzania, announced by Prime Minister Abiy, between the government of Ethiopia and members of the Oromo Liberation Army and encourages all parties to negotiate in good faith toward a mutually acceptable resolution.

The United States reaffirms the importance of its partnership with Ethiopia and commitment to work together on these and other issues of mutual interest,” the statement added

White House expresses deep concerns on humanitarian situation in Sudan

White House expresses deep concerns on humanitarian situation in Sudan

We remain gravely concerned about the unfolding humanitarian situation in Sudan including rapidly deteriorating humanitarian condition, White House Spokeswoman Karine Jean Pierre said Tuesday.

In a press briefing, Jean Pierre added, “this widespread violence compounds an already dire situation.” The SAF and the RCF must follow safe access for humanitarian agencies and their workers to support the Sudanese people for Sudanese medical workers to access hospitals and receive vital medical supplies for the civilians to access vital resources as well.

On another front, USAID announced the deployment of a Disaster Assistance Response Team, DART as it’s also called to Nairobi, Kenya to lead the US government disaster response there.

In areas where security conditions permit, US government partners are providing some limited lifesaving activities in Sudan.

The US government continues to work with partners to assess their ability to safely provide critical humanitarian assistance at the security situation permits, as the security situation permits.

As access and security permit, US funded humanitarian partners are present on the borders and working with local authorities to provide services to those in need including access to emergency food, water and medical support.

We are planning to use all available means including using the prepositioned medical and food supplies to ensure that humanitarian assistance can resume once security conditions permit.

Meanwhile, US State Department spokesperson Vedant Patel said, “we can continue to call for and seek the extension of these ceasefires while also working a process to achieve a permanent cessation of hostilities and humanitarian arrangements that we believe will be beneficial to the country and to the Sudanese people.” To support a durable end to this fighting, the United States, from all levels of this department, are coordinating with regional and international partners and Sudanese civilian stakeholders to assist in the creation of a committee to oversee the negotiation conclusion and an implementation of a permanent cessation of hostilities.

Extension of a ceasefire, we believe, are steps that will continue to help get us in that direction
