IPC’s imminent famine announcement a ‘grim milestone for millions of Palestinians’, says ActionAid

RAMALLAH: In response to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) report forecasting imminent famine in northern Gaza, ActionAid has denounced the announcement as a “stain on humanity’s conscience.”

The organization said in a statement on Tuesday that the report warns that 70% of people in northern Gaza are on the brink of famine unless urgent measures are taken to facilitate large-scale aid delivery and avert catastrophic hunger. Since the last analysis in December 2023, the conditions laid out by the IPC that were necessary to prevent famine have not been met and the latest evidence confirms that famine is imminent in the northern governorates and projected to occur anytime between mid-March and May 2024.

The report highlighted ongoing hostilities, mass forced displacement, and restricted humanitarian access as key drivers. Over the last several months, Israeli forces have prevented thousands of tonnes of aid from crossing by road into Rafah and into northern Gaza where the crisis is most s
evere.

Over the last 15 years, the IPC has announced famine in only two countries – after extreme hunger in Somalia in 2011 claimed the lives of 260,000 people and after war and drought drove famine to be declared in parts of South Sudan in 2017 and plunged millions into acute food insecurity.

Recently, UN officials stated that a quarter of Palestinians in Gaza were a step away from famine. On Friday, UNICEF reported that a staggering 1 in 3 children are acutely malnourished with the IPC reporting today that nearly all households are reducing their meals so that their children can eat. The IPC report pointed towards a steep rise in child deaths – which IPC experts believe may signal the imminent onset of famine.

Balsam, a nutritionist in Gaza, spoke about how young children are starting to die due to malnutrition:

‘Pregnant women are suffering malnutrition during this war. They cannot get the proper nutrients that both the mother and [their unborn baby] require. [Pregnant] women need to have a proper diet
. They need a full range of foods, especially animal protein. In the current circumstances we live in, and in this horrendous war, women, children, and the elderly are suffering from malnutrition. This is due to the lack of healthy and nutritious foods.

Many women suffer health problems and that has caused weight loss issues in both women and babies. Babies are born with a weight below 3.5 kilograms, which is the normal average weight for a newborn. That is a result of the shortage in nutritious food, especially for pregnant women.’

According to the Ministry of Health in Gaza, around 2,000 doctors and medical staff in northern Gaza face severe starvation, leaving them exhausted and unable to feed themselves properly while working around the clock to save lives.

Riham Jafari, Communications and Advocacy Coordinator at ActionAid Palestine, said:

“Palestinians have been living through six months of severe hunger – a never-ending nightmare claiming children’s lives while severely malnourished women give birth
to stillborn babies. And still, the world watches on in silence. Today’s announcement is a collective stain on humanity’s conscience and a catastrophic indictment of Western nations who have slept walked into this disaster while offering little meaningful action to avert an imminent famine.

After so many dire warnings in recent months, world leaders urgently need to wake up to the sheer scale of this catastrophe. Waiting for confirmation that famine has occurred to take the urgent steps needed to scale up aid would be indefensible – we need an immediate and permanent ceasefire now.’

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights: Projected imminent famine in Gaza can and must be prevented

GENEVA: The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Trk said that the projected imminent famine in Gaza can and must be prevented.

In a statement on the risk of famine in Gaza, he said: ‘The alarm bells sounded over the past months by the UN, including my Office, have not been heeded. This catastrophe is human-made and was entirely preventable.’

The situation of hunger, starvation and famine is a result of Israel’s extensive restrictions on the entry and distribution of humanitarian aid and commercial goods, the displacement of most of the population, as well as the destruction of crucial civilian infrastructure, he added.

‘Dangerous coping strategies are already emerging, in the face of starvation. Law and order is breaking down as people become increasingly desperate, and children have reportedly been sent to make the dangerous journey from northern to southern Gaza, unaccompanied in the desperate hope that they will find food and support among the 1.8 million people already displaced there.’

Israe
l’s now 16-year-old blockade of Gaza has already had a severe impact on human rights for the civilian population, leaving the local economy devastated and creating a dependence on aid, stressed the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. ‘The extent of Israel’s continued restrictions on the entry of aid into Gaza, together with the manner in which it continues to conduct hostilities, may amount to the use of starvation as a method of war, which is a war crime.’

‘Israel, as the occupying power, has the obligation to ensure the provision of food and medical care to the population commensurate with their needs and to facilitate the work of humanitarian organizations to deliver that assistance. Israel must ensure that the population can access this aid in a safe and dignified manner. International human rights law imposes a similar obligation,’ he said.

‘The clock is ticking. Everyone, especially those with influence, must insist that Israel acts to facilitate the unimpeded entry and distribution of needed human
itarian assistance and commercial goods to end starvation and avert all risk of famine.’

He stressed that there needs to be a full restoration of essential services, including the supply of food, water, electricity and fuel.

‘And there needs to be an immediate ceasefire.’

Israeli Forces Arrest 7,670 Palestinians in West Bank Since October 7

The tally of arrests conducted by Israeli occupation forces against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank since the aggression on the Gaza Strip started on October 7 has surged to 7,670 individuals.

In a joint statement released by the Palestinian Prisoners and Ex-Prisoners’ Authority along with the Palestinian Prisoners Society on Tuesday, it was disclosed that 15 Palestinians from the West Bank and occupied Jerusalem, including journalist Rula Hassanein and former detainees, were apprehended.

The sweep of arrest operations spanned across various regions including Jenin, Qalqilya, Ramallah, Hebron, and Jerusalem. Reports accompanying the arrest campaign outlined instances of widespread raids, physical abuse, severe beatings, and threats leveled against detainees and their families. Additionally, there were reports of rampant sabotage and demolition of Palestinian residences.

These systematic arrest campaigns stand as stark manifestations of the enduring policies enacted by occupation forces. They serve a
s pivotal components of the strategy of collective punishment, emblematic of the broader tactics employed by the occupation in targeting Palestinians, said the statement. These actions unfold against the backdrop of sustained aggression against the Palestinian populace and the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza since October 7, it added.

Astronomical Spring Equinox Marks Equal Day and Night

Imad Mujahid, an astronomy expert and member of the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences (AUASS), along with being a fellow of the British Royal Astronomical Society, revealed that astronomical calculations pinpoint the spring equinox for the current year occurring tomorrow, Wednesday, at 6:06 a.m. Kingdom time.

He explained that during this event, the sun will be directly perpendicular to the equator, effectively dividing the Earth into its northern and southern hemispheres. This marks the astronomical commencement of the spring season, with both day and night being of equal length across the globe, effectively concluding the approximately 89-day winter season.

Mujahid elaborated that during the vernal equinox, the sun rises precisely from the eastern horizon at 6:35 a.m., maintaining an angle of 89 degrees, 37 minutes, and 11 seconds. Conversely, it sets precisely at the western horizon at 6:54 p.m., at an angle of 270 degrees and 37 minutes, lasting for 12 hours and 9 minutes. Subsequently, the ni
ght spans 11 hours and 51 minutes, resulting in nearly equal durations of day and night worldwide.

Furthermore, following the vernal equinox, the sun’s apparent trajectory shifts northward, leading to rising temperatures and longer days, culminating in the summer solstice on June 21, when the sun reaches its maximum altitude north of the equator at 23.5 degrees, marking the longest day of the year and the shortest night.

Dozens of Jewish extremists raid Al Aqsa Mosque

Some 54 extremist Jewish settlers, escorted by Israeli police, stormed into the Al Aqsa Mosque/ Haram Al Sharif in occupied Jerusalem.

In the latest provocation, the settlers broke into the compound from Bab Al Magharebah Gate in the walled Old City of Jerusalem and performed prayers, prompting protests by Muslim worshipers and Mosque guards, the Islamic Waqf (endowments) Department said in a statement.

The occupation police have imposed tight restrictions on worshipers trying to access the compound since the start of the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip.

Far-right Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir has not only issued repeated orders barring Palestinians from the occupied West Bank from Al Aqsa Mosque during the holy month of Ramadan, but allowed right-wing Israelis and settlers to access the compound in the last, holiest ten days of the fasting month.

Solar Energy Program Sees High Citizen Interest Across Jordan

An initiative to deploy solar panel systems for residential use, facilitated through banks and associations with 30 percent backing from the Renewable Energy Promotion Fund under the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, has garnered significant attention from residents across all governorates of the Kingdom.

The Renewable Energy Promotion Fund announced Tuesday, that the acceptance of applications for the program via banks and associations is nearing completion due to the surging demand for the service.

Most of the financing windows designated for this phase of the program have nearly reached their limits, with some remaining windows. The Fund is expediting the process of finalizing agreements accordingly.

The Fund attributed the imminent conclusion of the program to both the robust interest from citizens and the swift execution of procedures by the financing windows and partner organizations. This efficiency has enabled the Fund to meet the program’s objectives and deplete its allocated budgets withi
n a remarkably short time frame.

Additionally, the Fund disclosed the commencement of disbursement procedures for all support claims submitted to it, covering 30 percent of the cost of the supported systems. These claims are received from the program’s financing windows and comply with the requisite conditions and documentation.

Assuring continuity, the Fund affirmed its commitment to executing the program in forthcoming phases, which will be announced in due course.

Furthermore, the Fund highlighted its ongoing provision of support for installing solar water heaters through various financing channels and the initial inclusion platform https://Solarenergy.gov.jo. There are no changes in the service provision procedures, it pointed out.

The Fund initiated the third phase of the national program in December 2023, aimed at supporting residential sectors with solar water heater systems and solar panels. This phase includes offering direct assistance to Jordanian households, covering 30 percent of the system’s
cost.

The initiative also facilitates the remaining payment through accredited banks and local associations, thereby reducing the monthly electricity expenses for these households.
