Egypt decries burning copy of the Quran in Sweden

Egypt decried on Friday a permit granted by the Swedish authorities to an extremist to set ablaze a copy of the holy book the Quran in the Swedish capital Stockholm.

The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, in a statement, the act is a blatant challenge that exceeded limits of freedom of expression, provoked millions of Muslims throughout the world and desecrated their sanctity.

The ministry expressed concern at recurring happenings of such incidents, intended to belittle religions and feed the phenomenon of Islamophobia.

Predominance of the speech of hatred in many States of the globe may lead to dire consequences, posing a threat to security and stability of communities and human rights.

States are ought to shoulder responsibilities and confront such crimes, prevent their recurrence and bringing culprits into account, it stressed.
