Malaysia warns against disgraceful use of freedom of expression

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim warned Friday against the disgraceful use of freedom of expression “to justify hatred and cruelty”, in the wake of burning a copy of the Holy Quran in the Swedish capital, Stockholm.

Unfortunately, with every progressive step taken against combating Islamophobia, hatred is increasing among those who hide their heinous acts behind the masks of freedom of expression, Ibrahim said in a statement.

He said that as much as “we” reject extremism, the extremist concept of freedom is equally harmful, which violates the rights of others.

He praised the UN Human Rights Council’s condemnation of this incident.

On July 12, the Human Rights Council adopted a resolution to combat religious hatred that increases violence and discrimination. Twenty-eight members voted for the resolution, 12 against, while seven abstained.
