Libya floods: More than 5000 dead, thousands missing

The number of victims who died in the floods that struck cities in eastern Libya has risen to 5,300, while the number of missing people is estimated at thousands, according to the Libyan News Agency. An official with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies added said that about 10,000 people are missing after torrential rains and floods. The Libyan Roads and Bridges Authority said that the collapsed road network in the city Derna, where the largest death toll is registered, is estimated at 30 kilometers. It added that the collapse of 5 bridges downstream of the valley in Derna was observed, and the estimated affected area in the vicinity of the valley is estimated at 90 hectares. The Authority pointed out that the only road open to traffic is the ‘Dahr Al Hamar’ road.
