BRASILIA– Luiz Inácio “Lula” da Silva has Sunday been elected as the President of Brazil in a stunning comeback to power 20 years after first winning the presidency in Brazil.
Da Silva, 77, of the leftist Workers’ Party, defeated incumbent Jair Bolsonaro in an extremely tight election, in which da Silva had 50.9% and Bolsonaro 49.1%.
For Da Silva, this marks a huge persoanl victory and a great return to power after a series of corruption allegation that led to his imprisonment, serving a 12-year prison sentence. However, the Supreme Court annulled the case, citing procedural errors, and Da Silva was freed.
“Today the only winner is the Brazilian people,” da Silva said in a speech Sunday evening at a hotel in downtown Sao Paulo. “It’s the victory of a democratic movement that formed above political parties, personal interests and ideologies so that democracy came out victorious.”
“Starting on January 1, 2023, I will govern for the 215 million Brazilians, not just the ones who voted for me. There are not two Brazils. We are one country, one people, one great nation,” Lula da Silva also said.
