Newspaper Review: Dailies highlight UN Special Rapporteur’s report on Israeli apartheid

Palestinian Arabic-language dailies focused today on a report by Michael Lynk, the UN Special Rapporteur for the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territory, in which he concluded that apartheid is being practiced by Israel in the occupied Palestine.

Al-Hayat Al-Jadida and Al-Ayyam said Lynk confirmed that apartheid is being practiced by Israel in the occupied Palestinian territory, echoing recent findings by Palestinian, Israeli and international human rights organizations, that apartheid is being practiced by Israel.

Al-Hayat Al-Jadida quoted the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, as saying that the Israeli occupation forces are insisting on the use of excessive use of force against Palestinian civilians.

Al-Quds focused on the latest developments in the Russia-Ukraine crisis, and reported on the shelling of the Ukrainian military command center by Russian forces. It said the Russian military admitted that 1,351 of its soldiers have been killed since the outbreak of the conflict.

On a different subject, Al-Quds said the Israeli occupation forces have started a detention campaign targeting Palestinian activists in Jerusalem and in 1948-occupied Palestine in anticipation of a security escalation during the upcoming holy month of Ramadan.

Al-Hayat Al-Jadida said President Mahmoud Abbas sent a cable yesterday to the Saudi King Salman bin Abdul Aziz in which he vehemently condemned the “terror attack” on Saudi Arabia and all hostile actions targeting the kingdom.

Al-Ayyam cited a report by Israeli daily Haaretz which said that Israeli soldiers operating in the South Hebron Hills in the occupied West Bank have been collecting personal information about human rights activists from Europe, citing a footage obtained by anti-occupation group Breaking the Silence.

Al-Quds said nearly 40,000 Palestinian Muslim worshipers performed the weekly Friday prayer yesterday in Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, despite Israeli restrictions.
