Israeli police attacks funeral convoy of iconic Al Jazeera journalist

Israeli police today attacked the funeral convoy of slain veteran Al Jazeera journalist as Palestinian mourners carried the journalist’s coffin on their way to the church.

A sizable Israeli police force cordoned off Saint Joseph Hospital, where the body of Shireen Abu Akleh is kept, setting up barricades at the hospital entrances and along the roads where her funeral procession is pass, not allowing Palestinian vehicles or pedestrians to pass.

Mounted police on horseback and scores of heavily-armed police afterwards stormed the hospital premises and attacked dozens of mourners who were shouting slogans condemning the Israeli occupation and raising Palestinian flags.

Police attacked with clubs the youth mourners insisting on carrying the coffin, draped in a Palestinian flag, on their shoulders to the Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Virgin in the Old City, where her funeral is set to take place, beating them mercilessly and showering them with skunk water before ultimately allowing a funeral vehicle to carry the coffin without being accompanied by the extraordinary number of mourners. Six Palestinians participating in the funeral procession were detained by Israeli police after being attacked with clubs at Bab al-Khalil in the Old City of Jerusalem.

Dozens of youths suffocated from tear gas inhalation, bruises, and fractures.

Police also prevented young men from hanging up Abu Akleh’s picture along with banners condemning her killing at the external walls of the church.

Tens of thousands of mourners are attending the funeral service before Abu Akleh is taken to the Mount Zion Cemetery, where she will be buried alongside her deceased parents in the next few hours.

Settlers attack Palestinian journalists’ vehicles covering protest in Masafer Yatta

Israeli settlers today attacked Palestinian journalists’ vehicles while covering a solidarity event organized to protest the Israeli authorities’ decision to demolish 12 villages in Masafer Yatta area, south of Hebron, in the southern occupied West Bank.

According to WAFA cameraman, Mashhoor al-Wahwah, a group of settlers attacked and destroyed the journalists’ vehicles while carrying out their duty in covering an event held in protest of the Israeli decision to demolish more than 12 villages in Masafer Yatta area.

The recent strongly-criticized Israeli High Court’s ruling upholding a decision to remove 12 Palestinian villages in Masafer Yatta and displace thousands of their Palestinian citizens in order to build illegal settlements comes at a time Palestinians mark the 74th anniversary of their Nakba when Israel was created in 1948 and more than 700,000 Palestinians were forced to leave their homes and land and become refugees.

Supporters of Palestine from across the New York City area, including Members and supporters of Within Our Lifetime, Samidoun New York/New Jersey, the Palestinian Youth Movement, Decolonize This Place, Existence Is Resistance, and over a dozen endorsing organizations will participate in the rally.

The demonstration, one of the dozens worldwide this weekend, will also protest the killing of Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank’s Jenin refugee camp on Wednesday.

“As we mourn the Nakba, we also mourn the murder of Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh,” said Nerdeen Kiswani, chair of Within Our Lifetime. “For the last 74 years, we have mourned countless Palestinians killed by the Israeli state, paid for by the U.S.”

Israeli settlers, backed by the army, gather at Bethlehem-area town, raise Israeli flags

Dozens of settlers, under the protection of the Israeli army, gathered today near the entrance to the town of Jannatah, to the east of Bethlehem, in a provocative manner while raising the Israeli flag, according to local sources.

Sources told WAFA that dozens of settlers gathered near the entrance to the town of Jannatah and raised the Israeli flags amid simmering tensions caused by settlers’ provocative measures and attempts to attack Palestinian residents.

Another group of settlers gathered at the entrance to the illegal settlement of Tekoa in the Bethlehem area and chanted anti-Palestinian and Arab slogans.

Israeli settlers’ vandalism in the occupied West Bank is routine and is done with full backing by the Israeli authorities, said the Israeli human rights group B’Tselem.

“Settler violence and vandalism take place with full backing by the Israeli authorities. Sometimes soldiers take part in the assault; at other times, they stand idly by. The police make no substantial effort to investigate the incidents, nor takes measures to prevent them or stop them in real-time,” it said.

Israel benefits from the repercussions, as settler violence has gradually dispossessed Palestinians of more and more areas in the West Bank, paving the way for a state takeover of land and resources, said B’Tselem.

15 European countries concerned over Israeli decision to advance plans for construction of 4.000 housing units in West Bank

Fifteen European countries today expressed concern about the decision of the Israeli Higher Planning Council to advance plans for the construction of more than 4.000 housing units in the West Bank. “We urge the Israeli authorities to reverse this decision.”

“The new housing units would constitute an additional obstacle to the two-state solution. Israeli settlements are in clear violation of international law and stand in the way of a just, lasting, and comprehensive peace between Israelis and Palestinians,” said a joint statement issued by Spokespersons of the Foreign Ministries of France, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, and Sweden.

This decision, as well as demolitions and evictions affecting the Palestinian populations in East Jerusalem and Area C, directly threaten the viability of a future Palestinian state, said the joint statement.

In this respect, we also urge the Israeli authorities not to proceed with any planned demolitions or evictions, especially in Masafer Yatta, they concluded.0

UN experts: Killing of Abu Akleh, who was clearly performing her duties as a journalist, may constitute a war crime

UN human rights experts condemned the killing of Al Jazeera journalist, Shireen Abu Akleh, in the occupied West Bank and called for a prompt, transparent, thorough, and independent investigation into her death, stating that “The killing of Abu Akleh, who was clearly performing her duties as a journalist, may constitute a war crime.”

The experts said Abu Akleh’s killing is part of a continuation of the high rate of attacks against media workers, particularly Palestinian journalists. More than 40 Palestinian journalists have reportedly been killed since 2000, with hundreds injured or targeted for violence. Women Palestinian journalists also regularly experience violence in the course of their work just for being journalists.

“The killing of Abu Akleh is another serious attack on media freedom and freedom of expression, amid the escalation of violence in the occupied West Bank,” said the experts.

“We demand a prompt, independent, impartial, effective, thorough, and transparent investigation into the killing of Shireen Abu Akleh, in full compliance with the Revised United Nations Manual on the Effective Prevention and Investigation of Extra-Legal, Arbitrary and Summary Executions (The Minnesota Protocol on the Investigation of Potentially Unlawful Death). We urge the Israeli and Palestinian authorities and other stakeholders to cooperate with such an investigation.”

Shireen Abu Akleh was shot dead on 11 May near the entrance to Jenin refugee camp, while reporting on a raid in Jenin conducted by the Israeli forces. Abu Akleh and other journalists present in the area wore protective gear clearly identifying them as media workers.

“Authorities have an obligation not to harm journalists and to protect them from harm under international humanitarian law and international human rights law,” said the experts. “The killing of Abu Akleh, who was clearly performing her duties as a journalist, may constitute a war crime.”

The targeting of journalists working in the occupied Palestinian territory and the Israeli authorities’ failure to properly investigate killings of media personnel also violate the rights to life and effective remedies, the experts said. The International Federation of Journalists has filed a formal submission to the ICC on the systematic targeting of journalists in the occupied Palestinian territory: Abu Akleh’s killing should be part of the ongoing investigation.

“The role of journalists, especially in a context of heightened tension and marked by continuous abuses, like the occupied Palestinian territory, is critical,” they said.

“Lack of accountability gives carte blanche to continue the litany of extrajudicial executions. The safety of journalists is essential in guaranteeing freedom of expression and media freedom.”

Violence has increased in the occupied Palestinian territory in recent years. Last year marked the highest number of Palestinian deaths resulting from confrontations with Israelis since 2014, as well as the highest number of settler violence incidents since they started to be reported in 2017.

“The unsustainable situation is inherent to the context of protracted military occupation, in which violence and repression are used to perpetuate a system of Palestinian subjugation,” said the experts.

“This is a political reality that requires firm action based on accountability and general compliance with international law. This must commence with the dismantlement of the occupation, including the Gaza blockade and the illegal settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.”

This came in a joint statement issued by Francesca Albanese, Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian Territory occupied since 1967; Morris Tidball-Binz, Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions; Reem Alsalem, Special Rapporteur on violence against women, its causes and consequences; and Irene Khan, Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression.
