UN information committee holds special session on Israeli assassination of Al Jazeera correspondent

The Information Committee of the United Nations General Assembly held today a special session at its headquarters in New York, within the framework of the 44th annual session, to discuss the assassination of Al-Jazeera journalist, Shireen Abu Akleh, who was killed by Israeli forces during a raid in Jenin on Wednesday, May 11.

At the outset of the meeting, which was held at the request of the mission of the State of Palestine to the United Nations, Cristian Espinosa Cañizares, Permanent Representative of Ecuador to the United Nations, who chaired the meeting, requested a moment of silence for Al Jazeera reporter Shireen Abu Akleh, along with other journalists who lost their lives while performing their duties.

He stressed the importance of protecting journalists and respecting their right to perform their duties without any threats to their lives while conveying the facts and the truth anywhere in the world, especially at sites that witness wars, conflicts, and occupation.
