Palestinian child, 12 years old, succumbs to wounds sustained from Israeli army gunfire

RAMALLAH– A 12-year-old Palestinian child has today succumbed to wounds sustained from Israeli army gunfire, according to the Ministry of Health.

It said Mahmoud Mohammad Samoudi, from Jenin, was critically injured by a live bullet in the belly during an army assault on Jenin 12 days ago and has today succumbed to his wounds.

Four Palestinians were killed and 44 were injured, including the child Samoudi, in the Israeli army assault on Jenin on September 28.

With Samoudi’s death, the toll of Palestinians killed in the occupied territories by Israeli army gunfire since the start of the year has reached 165.

UK calls for swift, thorough investigation into killing of Palestinian child

LONDON– The United Kingdom today called for a swift and thorough investigation into the killing of a 12-year-old Palestinian child by Israeli military gunfire.

The UK called on the Israeli occupation authorities to launch a swift and thorough investigation into the killing of Mahmoud Samoudi, a resident of Jenin, who succumbed to his critical injuries today after being shot by the occupation forces by a live round in the belly 12 days ago.

“Following the death of Mahmoud Mohammad Samoudi from wounds he received during an Israeli incursion into Jenin camp last month, the UK calls on the Israeli authorities to conduct a swift and thorough investigation and for restraint in the use of live ammunition,” the UK Consulate General in Jerusalem said in a statement.

Palestine calls on United Nations to provide special protection to Palestinian children

RAMALLAH- In a letter to the United Nations Secretary-General and Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict Secretary-General, the State of Palestine today urgently called on them to provide special protection for Palestinian children.

“Since the beginning of 2022, Israel, the occupying Power, has willfully killed over 44 Palestinian children and minors. Today, 12-year-old Mahmoud Samoudi, succumbed to his wounds, after the Israeli occupying forces had critically shot him in the abdomen twelve days ago in Jenin. Over the past few days alone, Israel, the occupying Power, has killed over five Palestinian children and youth, including: Adel Adel Daud (14), Mahdi Ladadwa (17), Mahmoud Sous (17), Fayez Khaled Damdoum (17), and Ahmad Draghmeh (19),” the letter sent by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates read.

“Deliberately aiming at the upper parts of their bodies, Israeli soldiers are applying Israel’s infamous shoot-to-kill policy that has resulted in the killing of hundreds of Palestinian children. These appalling crimes took place days following the killing of 7-year-old Rayan Suleiman by sheer terror of the Israeli occupation soldiers,” it added.

“Israel deliberately targets Palestinian children and minors with the stated aim of killing and maiming them, thus, denying them their right to life. Children must never be killed or maimed. The State of Palestine warns that Israel’s escalating crimes and deliberate targeting of Palestinian children will continue unabatedly and exponentially if accountability is not urgently and effectively pursued.”

“The evidence of Israel’s mounting crimes against Palestinian children is undoubtedly overwhelming. The State of Palestine calls on the Secretary-General to rightly add Israel on the list of shame for its systematic violations against Palestinian children. Willfully exempting Israel from facing consequences for its crimes is inconsistent with international law and resolutions that form the basis for protection of children in armed conflict.”

“Palestinian children are entitled to their human rights, to protection, to health, to dignity, and to peace. They are not an exception to these global rules. We reiterate that the selective application of international law is unacceptable and indefensible and is causing great harm not only to our people but to the international rules-based order.”

“We are firm in our conviction that the protection of children is humanity’s foremost moral, legal, and political obligation. The State of Palestine calls on the international community to end this intolerable nightmare that our children are living on a daily basis, and to take measures that hold Israel, the occupying Power, accountable for its heinous crimes.”

Newspapers Review: Tens of thousands under siege, raids, closures, and demolitions highlight of dailies

RAMALLAH– The two-day-long Israeli siege on Shufat refugee camp and the nearby town of Anata, where more than 100,000 Palestinians live, as well as the raids, closures and search for an attacker who opened fire at Israeli soldiers at Shufat checkpoint killing one and injuring another, and demolition of Palestinian-owned structures were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today.

“The occupation army placed tens of thousands of people under siege in Shufat camp and nearby neighborhoods, and conducted brutal campaigns,” said the main front-page headline in al-Ayyam daily.

“After the killing of soldiers in the Shufat operation, raids, closures and search campaigns looking for the attack,” said al-Quds daily’s main headline.

The third daily, al-Hayat al-Jadida had the following headline: “Raided Anata and continues to close Shufat camp, as settlers go on a rampage, attack vehicles of citizens in Ramallah, Hebron, Nablus, and the Jordan Valley; the occupation demolishes four structures, raze land for the construction of a settlement road in Yatta.”

Al-Ayyam also said that confrontations broke out in several neighborhoods in occupied East Jerusalem. It said a freed prisoner was detained after the army surrounded his home in the village of Abu Shkheidem, near Ramallah.

Al-Quds reported as well on the confrontations between Palestinian youths and soldiers in the West Bank and Jerusalem and said that demolitions were carried out in Masafer Yatta in the south of the West Bank.

It also said that 20 Palestinian prisoners in Israel have joined 30 other administrative detainees in declaring a solidarity hunger strike.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida quoted Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh saying his government will continue to support Palestinian human rights and civil society organizations outlawed by Israel.

Al-Ayyam reported, quoting “informed sources”, about progress in the talks between the Palestinian Investment Fund, Consolidated Contracting Company (CCC), and an Egyptian gas holding company on developing the Gaza gas field. It said that a memorandum of understanding was signed a year ago and since then talks were held, progress was made, but that there may be some time before a final agreement is reached.

The paper also said Algeria is ready to host a new session for the Palestinian National Council, the Palestinian parliament in exile, if the intra-Palestinian talks are successful.

After desecrating the Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron with singing and dancing, settlers burn, trash the Holy Quran

HEBRON– A week after fanatic Jewish settlers had desecrated the Ibrahimi Mosque in the southern West Bank city of Hebron with singing and dancing, settles today desecrated the Muslim holy book, the Quran, burning copies, tearing them and then trashing them near the Ibrahimi Mosque, according to a local official.

Nidal Jaabari, director of the Hebron Waqf department, told WAFA that settlers tore and burnt copies of the Quran and then threw them in the trash near the Ibrahimi Mosque in the old town of Hebron, which is under full Israeli military rule and where several hardcore settlement enclaves are located, considering this act as an affront to Muslims and Islam.

Israel usually closes the Ibrahimi Mosque, also known as the Cave of the Patriarchs, to Muslims during Jewish holidays and allows only Jews to be present in it.

On first day of Sukkot holiday, Jewish fanatics storm Al-Aqsa Mosque, march through Jerusalem’s Old City alleys

JERUSALEM– Jewish fanatics today marked the first day of the Sukkot holiday with the storming of the Muslim holy place, Al-Aqsa Mosque, and holding provocative marches through the narrow streets of Jerusalem’s occupied Old City, reported WAFA correspondent.

She said dozens of Jewish fanatics broke into Al-Aqsa Mosque after Israeli police cleared the yards of the holy compound from the Muslim worshippers in order to facilitate the presence of the fanatics, some of whom performed rituals in violation of a decades-long status quo that ban non-Muslims from holding prayers of any kind in its premises.

At the same time, fanatics marched through the Old City streets while holding rituals near the gates leading to Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Jewish extremist groups have called on their followers to storm Al-Aqsa Mosque during the seven-day Sukkot holiday and to hold rituals there as part of efforts to create a fait accompli in the Muslim holy site that would eventually lead to allowing Jewish prayers there as well, a step Muslims have warned could provoke religious strife in the holy land.

Jerusalem church leaders say moving the UK embassy to Jerusalem is a further impediment to peace

JERUSALEM– Leaders of Jerusalem churches have warned in a statement today that moving the British embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem is a further impediment to advancing the already moribund peace process.

The Council of the Patriarchs and Heads of the Churches in Jerusalem said that it has noted “with grave concern” the recent call of the new British Prime Minister, Liz Truss, at the request of the Conservative Friends of Israel, for her government to review the placement of the British Embassy to Israel from its present location in Tel Aviv to a new site in Jerusalem.

“As a city holy to the three Abrahamic Faiths representing more than half the world’s population, Jerusalem has long been recognized by the International Community, including the United Kingdom, as having a special status (Corpus Separatum), one aimed at safeguarding the freedom of religion, the sacred character of Jerusalem as a Holy City, and the respect for, and freedom of access to, its holy places,” said the statement.

“The religious Status Quo in Jerusalem is essential for preserving the harmony of our Holy City and good relations between religious communities around the globe,” it said, adding, “Implicit to the recognition of this Status Quo is the aforementioned Corpus Separatum that most of the world’s governments have applied by refraining from locating their embassies in Jerusalem until a final status agreement on the Holy City has been reached. The contemplated movement of the British Embassy to Jerusalem would severely undermine this key principle of Corpus Separatum and the political negotiations that it seeks to advance.”

The Council of the Patriarchs and Heads of the Churches in Jerusalem stressed that “the very act of reviewing the placement of the British Embassy not only suggests that negotiated agreements regarding Jerusalem and the West Bank have already resolved the ongoing disputes between the involved parties—when in fact they have not—but also implies that no such negotiations are needed: that the continuing military occupation of those territories and the unilateral annexation of East Jerusalem are both acceptable. We cannot believe that this is the message that the British government wishes to send to the world.”

The Council said it regards this embassy review “as a further impediment to advancing the already moribund Peace Process,” adding, “Rather than commit valuable governmental resources to such a counterproductive endeavor, we encourage the British Prime Minister and government to instead redouble their diplomatic efforts towards facilitating the restart of negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority in order to move forward with a time-delimited and phased Peace Initiative, all in accordance with International Law and relevant UN resolutions. Only through such an Initiative, we believe, will a just and lasting peace ever be established in Jerusalem and throughout the Middle East.”
