Belgium, EU Affirm Strategic Partnership with Jordan Amid Regional Strife


The Ambassador of the European Union (EU), Pierre-Christophe Chatzisavas, and the Ambassador of Belgium, Serge Dickschen, emphasized the crucial role of Jordan, under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II, in fostering peace and stability in the Middle East region.

During a reception held at the residence of the Belgian ambassador in Amman on Monday evening to celebrate Europe Day, they underscored the significance of Jordan’s strategic partnership with the European Union.

The event was attended by Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Zeina Toukan, along with various officials, ambassadors, business people, journalists, and invitees.

In his speech, Ambassador Dickschen, whose country currently holds the rotating presidency of the European Union, commended Jordan’s efforts led by King Abdullah II, supported by the Jordan Hashemite Charity Organization and the Jordan Armed Forces – Arab Army, along with contributions from Belgium and other nations through relief airdrops for Gaza. He e
mphasized Jordan’s pivotal role in the region and its strategic partnership with the EU.

Dickschen reiterated Belgium’s commitment, alongside other member states, to advocate for an unconditional and sustainable ceasefire in Gaza, conducive to reviving the political process, upholding international law, and ensuring unhindered access to humanitarian aid.

Highlighting the ongoing challenges in the aftermath of the war in Gaza, Dickschen stressed the urgent need for diplomacy and justice to secure lasting peace in the region, emphasizing the importance of Jordan’s leadership in stabilizing the area.

He outlined the priorities of Belgium’s presidency of the EU in the first half of 2024, including finalizing legislative files and supporting candidate countries in their accession efforts.

Ambassador Chatzisavas echoed the significance of Jordan’s role in regional stability, emphasizing the current need for intensive diplomacy and justice. He praised King Abdullah II’s efforts in advancing peace and implementin
g economic and political reforms in Jordan.

Minister Toukan emphasized the multifaceted partnership between Jordan and Europe, spanning investment, refugee support, and confronting shared challenges. She stressed the importance of strengthening bilateral ties in trade, water management, infrastructure, financial governance, and logistics.

Child dies after falling from bus in Irbid


A 7-year-old child died Tuesday after falling from a minibus in the Madhal neighbourhood in the Taibe District, Irbid.

The Director of Education for the Taibe and Wasateya Districts, Tayseer Jarrah, denied what is being circulated that the bus that caused the accident was affiliated with a private school within the Taibe District.

He told Petra that the incident happened after school hours and in one of the Taibe neighbourhoods far from the school the victim used to go to.

The child was pronounced dead after arriving at the Moaz bin Jabal Governmental Hospital.

UN calls on Israel to protect humanitarian convoys from settlers attacks


The United Nations called on Israel on Tuesday to protect humanitarian convoys heading to Gaza.

“Israel must protect the convoys from Israeli settler violence, ensure that all allegations of settler violence are investigated, and prosecute the perpetrators,” said Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq.

Settlers in the West Bank yesterday attacked Gaza-bound aid trucks, unloading and vandalizing the vehicles, while several trucks were damaged.

“We of course oppose all attacks on humanitarian convoys, whether by settlers or anyone else,” Farhan Haq said in response to a question from the Jordan News Agency (Petra).

“But I want to emphasize to everyone how dangerous this is. While people are in danger of starving to death, there is no excuse to prevent or attack various convoys as they try to deliver food to those in need.”

Sultan of Oman visits Al-Salam Palace Museum


KUWAIT, Sultan of Oman Haitham bin Tareq and the accompanying delegation visited the Al-Salam Palace Museum on Tuesday.

His Highness Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, head of the honorary delegation, accompanied Sultan Haitham during his visit.

At the museum, the Sultan was received by Minister of the Amiri Diwan Affairs Sheikh Mohammad Al-Abdullah Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah.

During the tour of the museum, Sultan Haitham was shown historical artefacts and documents related to the history and culture of Kuwait, as well as the grand halls located in Al-Sala Palace where previous Kuwaiti Amirs frequented.

At the end of the tour, Sultan Haitham inked the register of honor at the museum.

UNRWA: 450 thousand people were forcibly displaced from the Palestinian city of Rafah


Baghdad, The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) revealed today, Tuesday, that 450,000 people have been forcibly displaced from the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip since May 6.

UNRWA stated on the (X) platform, ‘The streets of Rafah have become empty as families continue to flee in search of safety, but an immediate ceasefire has become the only hope, after nearly 1.5 million Palestinians were displaced from across the Gaza Strip as a result of Israeli military operations, and we need a ceasefire now.”

UNRWA had previously reported that more than 150,000 pregnant women face terrible health conditions and health risks amid displacement and war in Gaza.

UNRWA stressed that it is Israel’s responsibility to protect it as an occupying power, and to ensure the protection of United Nations personnel and facilities at all times, in accordance with international law.

The Palestinian WAFA news agency reported that a number of settler today also threw burning materials in p
arts of the external square and threw stones at the agency’s headquarters in occupied al-Quds, for the third time in a week.

ICJ to Hold Public Hearings on Thursday and Friday Regarding Additional Provisional Measures Connected to Israel’s Rafah Escalation


The Hague, The International Court of Justice (ICJ) announced today that it will hold public hearings on Thursday and Friday with regards to South Africa’s request for the indication of additional provisional measures to be implemented by the Israeli entity, including withdrawing its military from Rafah.

In a statement, the court indicated that South Africa will make the case on Thursday, for the indication of additional provisional measures and the modification of provisional measures previously prescribed by the court in the case concerning Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip (South Africa v. Israel), whereas Israel will deliver its response to the matter on Friday.

UNRWA: 450,000 People Forcibly Displaced From Rafah


New York: The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) revealed that 450,000 people have been forcibly displaced from the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip since May 6.

The streets are empty in Rafah as families continue to flee in search of safety, UNRWA said in a post on X platform, stressing that an immediate ceasefire is the only hope.

The Israeli occupation forces (IOF) began an operation in the eastern city of Rafah last week, amid regional and international warnings of the repercussions of launching a military operation in the city, which is home to approximately 1.5 million Palestinians who were displaced from across the Strip as a result of Israeli military operations.

UNRWA reported earlier that more than 150,000 pregnant women face dire health conditions amid displacement and war in Gaza.

Jordan condemns extremists’ storming of al-Aqsa mosque


Jordan on Tuesday strongly denounced the extremists’ storming of the Al-Aqsa Mosque/ al-Haram al-Sharif compound, raising the Israeli flag inside its courtyards under the heavy protection of the Israeli occupation police.

Spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Sufyan Qudah said in a statement that the storming of the Al-Aqsa Mosque by the extremists and their obstructing the entry of Muslim worshipers into the holy shrine and the frequent escalations are blatant and unacceptable violations of international law and the historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem and its sanctities.

He emphasized that the holy compound, which covers a total area of 144 dunums, is a solely Muslim place of worship, and Israel has no sovereignty over it or over occupied East Jerusalem and its Islamic and Christian holy sites.

Additionally, he called on Israel, as the occupying power, to cease all practices and violations against the al-Aqsa Mosque/al-Haram al-Sharif and to respect its sanctity.

He also
stressed that the Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque Affairs Department is the body with exclusive jurisdiction to manage all affairs of the compound and organize entry to it.

Chief of Staff Meets Lebanese Army Commander

Doha: HE Chief of Staff of Qatar Armed Forces Staff Lieutenant-General (Pilot) Salem bin Hamad bin Aqeel Al Nabit met with HE Commander of Army of the Republic of Lebanon General Joseph Aoun.

The meeting discussed topics of common concern, as well as aspects of bilateral cooperation and ways to strengthen and develop them.

The meeting was attended by a number of senior Armed Forces officers.

Ministry of Municipality’s Pavilion Enriches 33rd Doha International Book Fair

Doha: The Ministry of Municipality is taking part in the ongoing 33rd Doha International Book Fair, held in the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center (DECC) until May 18, under the theme “Knowledge Builds Civilizations.” through the ministry’s own and outstanding pavilion.

Director of the Public Relations Department at the Ministry of Municipality Dr. Fayqa Abdullah Ashkanani said that the pavilion consists of two sections: the first is dedicated to highlighting the ministry’s work, achievements, services, and publications covering its five competency areas, in addition to annual reports and building permit manuals, available in both hard-copy and soft-copy formats.

As for the second section, it is dedicated to informing visitors on the Panda House Park and holds educational and entertainment activities and competitions for children, such as the Suhail and Thuraya competition, which is held daily.
