London, UAE, May 15, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — XTCC, the investment ecosystem specialising in high-integrity carbon credits, has launched the first Shariah-compliant multi-currency asset class of high-integrity carbon credits.  Sourced exclusively from validated projects (including renewable energy, nature-based solutions and blue carbon), XTCC gives investors seeking Shariah-compliant investments the ability to participate in the fast-growing carbon credit market.

This powerful combination of Shariah-compliant investments and high-integrity carbon credits enables the traditional Islamic finance market for the first time to participate in the potential significant growth in value of the global carbon credit market. Through XTCC, corporates, wealth managers, banks and investment funds can invest with certainty and encourage further development towards net zero goals.

In another capital markets first, XTCC for the first time provides a stock market quoted price for the most important asset for the net zero world.

Validated and certified for Shariah compliance by Yasaar Research Limited, and using the ISDA/IIFM Master Agreement, XTCC has established a robust framework for investment products structured to meet the highest Shariah-compliant standards. The Fatwa is the first for carbon as an asset class, and for the investment products issued by Al Waseelah, a world-leading, award-winning Sukuk issuance platform, creating a streamlined, transparent solution to re-engineer trust in this important asset class.

Under the requirements of the Fatwa, XTCC not only adheres to industry standard transaction documentation (ISDA/IIFM) but only includes  in the reference basket high-integrity carbon credits which conform to  IOSCO’s 21 Good Practices and ICVCM’s Core Carbon Principles; science-based principles for identifying high-integrity carbon credits that create real, verifiable climate impact.  XTCC also reports on alignment with UN Sustainable Development Goals and ISO14064 standards.

Dr Scott Levy, Founder, XTCC, said: “This is a significant breakthrough for global capital markets. We have created the first Shariah-compliant investment product to link Islamic finance directly with accelerating investor demand for high-integrity carbon credits.  In the same way that there ‘can be no compromise on Shariah compliance’, we do not compromise our ethos of operating to the highest standards of transparency and integrity with respect to all of our investment products. XTCC is the asset class for the net zero world.”

Majid Dawood, CEO of Yasaar, said: “We take pride in certifying the Shariah compliance of XTCC’s investment products, ensuring they meet the highest standards of Islamic finance. Our expertise guarantees that every investment decision upholds the ethical and financial principles necessary for true Shariah compliance, empowering investors to contribute positively to sustainable development initiatives with full confidence in their adherence to Islamic values.”

Renowned carbon market expert Kevin Iwanaga, co-founder of the UAE Carbon Alliance and CEO of KBI Advisory Group, said: “With global temperatures surpassing 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels for the first time, and a staggering $7.3 trillion in funding needed by 2050 to bridge the climate finance gap necessary to limit global warming to 1.5°C, we need every solution available to address these crucial challenges. XTCC is rising to this challenge with the introduction of its new Shariah investment products, engineered to scale global capital flows in carbon markets by tapping into existing market liquidity pools and new investors. This XTCC initiative is an excellent example of the type of creative financial solutions needed to keep 1.5°C alive.”

Health, Water Ministers highlight development of both sectors’ services in Zarqa

Amman: Health Minister, Firas Hawari said that the health sector in Zarqa Governorate has seen significant development over the past 25 years, cumulatively.

During an interview with Jordan TV, accompanied by Minister of Water and Irrigation, Raed Abu Al-Saud, Hawari added that the number of health centers in Zarqa, northeast Amman, reached 38, including 10 comprehensive centers, 23 primary centers and 6 sub-centers, in addition to two main hospitals, Zarqa Public and Prince Faisal.

He explained that the ministry is in the process of floating a tender to re-expand Prince Faisal Hospital with an area of more than 5,700 square meters, including emergency, operations and intensive care departments, which will constitute a qualitative leap for services in the hospital, noting that dialysis beds were increased in the hospital earlier.

The people of Zarqa, according to Hawari, have seen great changes in services delivery in the Zarqa Public Hospital, which has witnessed great development and has become comparable
to Prince Hamza Hospital in Amman.

Regarding cardiac catheterization, Hawari said, “We have cardiac catheterization and cardiac surgery in Al-Bashir Hospital, Al-Hussein Salt Hospital, Karak Public Hospital and Zarqa Hospital, which is the last hospital to which this service has been added, and has conducted nearly 100 operations since the opening of its catheterization unit a year ago.”

He explained that the ministry has 23 cardiologists specialized in catheterization operations, and 13 specialists in cardiac surgery, and hundreds of operations have been conducted in these hospitals in this field, adding that quality open heart operations were performed in Al-Bashir hospitals, including arterial transplantation during heartbeat.

For his part, Minister Abu Al-Saud, said during the interview that the water sector in Zarqa Governorate has witnessed great development over the past years, and many large and ambitious water projects have been implemented.

He explained that the value of water projects implement
ed in the governorate over the past 25 years amounted to $1billion, including the Khirbet al-Samra project, which cost about $500 million and was implemented in partnership between the government, the private sector and donor countries to reflect a unique experience of its kind.

He added that the governorate has recently witnessed the implementation of 71 projects, 65 of which have been completed, while the rest are under implementation, and 1,100 kilometers of water networks have been built.

Regarding water losses in the Kingdom, Abu Al-Saud said that 80 percent of the losses are due to theft, noting that another percentage of losses are due to the age of the networks, which the ministry is working to reduce, not to mention the geographical nature of the land.

He said that 1 percent of the loss is equivalent to 5 to 6 million cubic meters of water, which confirms the importance of preserving water and the ministry’s keenness to address this matter through modernizing networks and continuing inspection cam
paigns to control attacks on water networks in various regions of the Kingdom.

MOPH Organizes Regional Meeting on Capacity Building to Improve Use of Antibiotics in the Region

Doha: The Ministry of Public Health and the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean organized a regional meeting titled “Data for Action: Using antibiotic consumption data to improve prescription and stewardship activities.” A total of 50 representatives from 11 countries in the Eastern Mediterranean region participated, along with experts from the WHO headquarters in Geneva, regional and country offices, as well as the World Organization for Animal Health, the Gulf Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, the Africa Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, and universities such as the University of Washington, and the University of Melbourne.

The meeting discussed the effective use of several data sources on antimicrobial consumption by the participating countries, as well as developing a roadmap for the next three to five years for the effective use of this data to enhance policy-making processes and to improve the prescription and use of antibiotics by healthcare providers and the public.

Antimicrobial resistance poses a significant threat to public health globally, particularly in the Eastern Mediterranean region, where data shows a growing resistance among several microorganisms to multiple medications. The ability for organisms to become resistant to medications is known as multi-drug resistance (MDR). This resistance makes the treatment of common infectious diseases challenging, occasionally leading to increased mortality rates, especially among vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and those with compromised immune systems. The most significant factor driving antimicrobial resistance is the improper use of antibiotics, a particularly acute issue in the 22 countries within the Eastern Mediterranean region, as some are currently facing conflicts that weaken their healthcare systems.

Dr. Jameela Al Ajmi, the National focal point for Antimicrobial Resistance and Infection Prevention and Control at the Ministry of Public Health, stated, “The Ministry of Public Health has taken sev
eral steps to improve the use of data generated through our national AMC surveillance systems, and we are honored to take this opportunity to share our experience with the rest of the countries in our region.” She added, “We are very proud to co-host this event with EMRO/WHO, and to contribute to the improvement of the national efforts to curb the increase of antibiotic resistance. Utilizing national antibiotic consumption data will provide an opportunity to understand how we manage antibiotics and how we can optimize our utilization.” Dr. Abdullatif Alkhal, Chair of the National AMR Committee in the State of Qatar, commented, “Antimicrobial resistance is a global public health problem that requires collaborative efforts across all sectors and countries to be able to reduce the burden of the problem. The spread of MDROs multi-drug resistant organisms does not respect country borders. Hence, collaboration such as this regional meeting is an integral part of our journey to control the increase in AMR. We look f
orward to working together to move the agenda of AMR forward while leaving no one behind.” Dr. Rana Hajjeh, Director of Program Management at WHO EMRO, noted, “The Eastern Mediterranean region has the highest and the most rapidly rising levels of antibiotic consumption across all the WHO regions. Antibiotics are very precious and essential medicine, an asset we would like to preserve. However, in our region, we face a double challenge: first, we have inappropriately high use of antibiotics in several countries, and second, there is poor access to essential antibiotics in many countries. Our aim is to improve the access, availability, and use of antibiotics through proper market shaping. This would require building capacity for our national drug regulators and country officials to better use available antibiotics consumption data to support decision making.” Dr. Hajjeh also stressed the World Health Organization’s commitment to reducing antimicrobial resistance, adding, “The WHO is committed to work with partn
ers and governments to increase investment and capacity building to support these efforts.” Dr. Rayana Bou Haka, WHO’s representative in Qatar, stated, “The joint organization of this important regional meeting is an opportunity to showcase the synergies and collaborative efforts of MOPH Qatar and WHO towards this critical health issue. It is also an opportunity for Qatar Health institutions to transfer knowledge and provide their technical capacity, thus serving the regional health agenda.”
