President Mahmoud Abbas today discussed the grave situation in Jerusalem with his Tunisian counterpart Kais Saied.

President Abbas received a phone call from his Tunisian counterpart, Saied, during which they discussed the Israeli occupation authorities’ forced expulsions of Palestinians from their houses in Sheikh Jarrah and Israeli police and settlers violent assaults against demonstrators and worshippers in Al-Aqsa Mosque compound and the city.

President Saied briefed Abbas about his country’s request to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to hold an urgent session on the issue.

He pointed that his country, the Arabic member in UNSC, filed the request to convene UNSC, following his directions, in coordination with the Palestinian side and with the support of China, the current President of UNSC, Norway, Ireland, Vietnam, Saint Vincent, the Grenadines and Niger.

The UNSC session, according to President Saied, will discuss the dangerous escalation and the Israeli occupation authorities’ aggressive actions in the occupied territories, particularly in Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque, police and settlers assaults against Palestinian worshippers, besides to the occupation authorities’ expansionist colonial policies, taking the form of colonial settlement construction, home demolitions, forced expulsions of Palestinian families, land grab and obliteration of the cultural and historical character of Jerusalem.

He stressed that Tunisia has embarked on this request to convene UNSC out of its commitment to defend the just Palestinian cause at regional and international forums, and confront the Israeli occupation authorities’ practices, which violate international law, pose a threat to international peace and security and undermine efforts aimed at achieving a just, lasting and comprehensive peace in the region.

He added that the initiative to convene UNSC came as part of his country’s keenness to renew its calls to the international community to assume its responsibilities regarding the ongoing Israeli aggression on the Palestinian people.
