RAMALLAH, Monday, May 24, 2021 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas met with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shokri at the presidential headquarters in Ramallah, where they discussed the latest political developments in the occupied Palestinian territories.
The president briefed the Egyptian foreign minister on the latest contacts made by the Palestinian leadership with the United States, the United Nations, and the relevant Arab and international parties to stop the persistent Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people in occupied Jerusalem and the West Bank, including the Israeli forces and settler extremists’ attacks on al-Aqsa mosque and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in occupied Jerusalem.
He also stressed the need to ensure the continuation of a cease-fire in Gaza and to start a political process, under the supervision of the International Quartet, that ends the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories, and leads to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, in line with international legitimacy decisions.
“We are ready to continue dialogue to form a government of national accord that is committed to international legitimacy,” President Abbas said.
President Abbas praised the efforts made by Egypt in cooperation with the Arab brothers, the American administration, and the concerned parties, to stop the aggression against the Palestinian people, praising Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi’s initiative to provide $500 million for the reconstruction of the devastated Gaza strip.
For his part, the Egyptian Foreign Minister affirmed his country’s stance in support of the Palestinian cause in various fields, affirming Egypt’s continued efforts to achieve Palestinian national unity.
