Israeli settlers vandalize two shacks near Salfit

Extremist Israeli settlers vandalized two shacks today for two Palestinian brothers outside the village of Kafr al-Dik in the occupied West Bank province of Salfit, according to local sources.

Mohammad Naji, mayor of the village, told WAFA that a group of Israeli settlers were seen by local residents vandalizing and ransacking the two shacks, located in an open area outside the village. The two shacks belong to Hatem and Farah Qasem, two brothers from the village.

Israeli settler violence against Palestinians and their property is commonplace across the West Bank and is rarely prosecuted by Israeli occupation authorities.

There are over 600,000 Israeli settlers living in colonial settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem in violation of international law and consensus.

Israel’s top court rejects a petition against demolition of two schools, 32 homes in Masafer Yatta

The Supreme Israeli Court rejected today a petition demanding the abolition of an Israeli order to demolish two schools and 32 residential facilities in Masafer Yatta region, to the south of Hebron in the occupied West Bank, according to local sources.

Nedal Younes, the head of the Masafer Yatta village council, told WAFA that the court rejected a petition submitted by residents of four communities in Masafer Yatta against the imminent Israeli demolition of two schools and about 32 shacks in Khirbet Al Fakheit and Jinba, two of about 20 hamlets forming the Masafer Yatta area.

He said the court’s order gives the Israeli army a green light to go ahead with the demolition of Palestinian structures and residential facilities in the area.

On May 4, the Israeli High Court gave the Israeli army the green light to demolish and displace over 1000 Palestinians living in some eight communities in Masafer Yatta in order to turn the area into a training and a firing zone.

The decision promoted strong local and international condemnation and warning of serious consequences if carried out.

Israel has been gradually demolishing homes and displacing families in several Masafer Yatta communities over the past few weeks.

Al-Haq says its director general received a threatening phone call from Israeli intelligence

The General Director of Al-Haq human rights organization, Shawan Jabarin, received a phone call today from a person introducing himself as captain Fahed of the Israeli Security Service, the Shabak, who demanded that Shawan arrives for interrogation at the Ofer military base of the Israeli occupying forces, located near Ramallah, the group said in a statement.

According to the statement, Shawan refused to comply and told the person he has no guarantees that he is a real person from the Shabak. The person then said he could send Shawan a message to whatsapp. Shawan responded that as an individual whose work is done in accordance with international law, he will not take the call seriously and that an official letter through a lawyer needs to be sent, or that the Israeli army could visit him in Ramallah, but that he will not go to Ofer.

The caller then told Shawan that Israel and the Israeli army have declared Al-Haq to be an illegal entity and a terrorist organization that was shut down and that Israel will not allow the organization to remain open and functioning. The caller then falsely claimed that Al-Haq has ties to the PFLP and that Shawan is a member of the PFLP.

Shawan responded that all these accusations are utter nonsense and complete lies and that Israel continues to fabricate allegations against Palestinian civil society organizations and human rights defenders. The caller then threatened Shawan that a price, including a personal price from Shawan, will be paid through imprisonment, interrogations and other measures, if Al-Haq continues to work.

During the phone call, which lasted around five minutes, Shawan asked the caller if he is being threatened, and the caller confirmed and reiterated that a personal price will be paid and that Israel will not allow Al-Haq to continue its work.

Al-Haq urgently demanded that the international community immediately take targeted and effective action to protect Al-Haq, its General Director Shawan Jabarin and other Palestinian civil society organizations and human rights defenders, who are now facing existential threats.

Israeli forces summon, briefly detain NGO’s General Director, keep him in custody

Israeli forces Sunday summoned and briefly detained Khaled Quzmar, the General Director of the Defense for Children Palestine (DCIP) organization, according to posts published on the office’s official Twitter page.

The organization said in a tweet that “Khaled Quzmar,, DCIP’s General Director, is in Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) custody as Israeli authorities again escalate attacks against DCIPalestine, Al-Haq, Addammer, and others.”

It added that Quzmar was summoned for interrogation by the Israeli Security Agency.

“Quzmar received a phone call at 2:25 pm local time from a Shin Bet agent summoning him for interrogation. He went to Israel’s Ofer military base soon after…,” said the organization.

“An eyewitness at Ofer military base saw Quzmar escorted into Shin Bet premises around 3:20 pm. Quzmar was not allowed to have legal counsel accompany him. We are waiting for updates.”

Quzmar was interrogated for two hours and released, according to sources.

Last week, Israeli forces raided the headquarters of seven Palestinian human rights and civil society organizations in the occupied West Bank cities of Ramallah and al-Bireh and ordered the places to be shut down after ransacking them and seizing documents.

Prime Minister discusses developments with New Zealand’s representative to Palestine

Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh Sunday met with New Zealand’s Special Representative to Palestine, Greg Lewis, and briefed him with the latest updates and political developments, in addition to enhancing joint cooperation.

The Prime Minister stressed that Israel is working to systematically destroy the two-state solution, through its measures of seizing more land in favor of settlement expansion, the continuation of daily incursions into Palestinian areas, killings, arrests, house demolitions and property destruction, and the continued attacks of settlers under the protection of the occupation forces.

Shtayyeh stressed that what the occupation forces have recently done against a number of Palestinian civil society organizations and human rights institutions is illegal measures, stressing that the leadership and the government stand by these institutions in performing their tasks guaranteed by Palestinian and international law.

The Prime Minister also discussed with the representative of New Zealand enhancing joint cooperation, especially the education sector, praising his country’s support for the health sector and the UNRWA.

Israeli court rejects appeal to release hunger-striking prisoner

The Israeli Supreme Court Sunday has rejected the appeal request submitted for the release of Palestinian prisoner Khalil Awawda, who has been on hunger strike for 172 days protesting his illegal detention in Israeli jails, despite the severe deterioration in his health conditions.

According to Awawda’s lawyer, Ahlam Hadad, the court rejected the appeal request which demanded the immediate release of the prisoner Awawda and affirmed the desicion to freeze his administrative detention.

The Israeli Court considered that the “freezing” decision is appropriate for the case of Awawda, stressing the implementation of the administrative suspension conditions and that dealing with him should be the same as any patient in the hospital, and that visitors are allowed without discrimination.

Awawda was supposed to be releleased on September 15th, while his lawyer submitted an “immediate release” request to the court in order for the prisoner to be released on September 1st. The court denied the request after the Shin Bet filed a “confidential file” to the judge.

The Prisoner’s Society clarified that the decision to “freeze” the detention of prisoner Awawda came “based on medical data and reports from the hospital indicating a danger to his life, but if his health condition improves and the detainee decides to leave the hospital, his administrative detention will be activated immediately.”

Awawda is kept at an Israeli hospital, with his hands cuffed to the bed, following the serious deterioration of his health due to the long hunger strike.

Palestinians believe the suspension decision is a ploy to get the prisoner to end and recover from his hunger strike before reinstating the administrative detention order.

Awawda, 40, from the town of Idna in the southern West Bank district of Hebron, broke a 111-day fast last month after being reassured by Israeli prison authorities that his administrative detention would not be renewed, but he resumed the hunger strike a week later after the occupation authorities reneged on their promise not to end his unfair detention order.

Two weeks ago, the Israeli military court of Ofer allowed his lawyer and a physician to visit him for the first time in order to prepare a medical report about his health condition and submit it before the court to look into his release.

The father of four has been in jail since 27 December 2021, and has been placed in administrative detention, without charge or trial, ever since.

Israel’s widely condemned policy of administrative detention allows the detention of Palestinians without charge or trial for renewable intervals usually ranging between three and six months based on undisclosed evidence that even a detainee’s lawyer is barred from viewing.

Currently, Israel is holding over 680 Palestinians in administrative detention, deemed illegal by international law, most of them former prisoners who spent years in prison for their resistance of the Israeli occupation.

Amnesty International, has described Israel’s administrative detention policy as a “cruel, unjust practice which helps maintain Israel’s system of apartheid against Palestinians.”
