LG HOME APPLIANCE FACTORY IN UNITED STATES LATEST TO RECEIVE PRESTIGIOUS ‘LIGHTHOUSE’ STATUS

LG Electronics Tennessee Plant is Selected as Industry’s First U.S. Home Appliance Lighthouse Factory by World Economic Forum

SEOUL, South Korea, Jan. 16, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — LG Electronics'(LG) home appliance manufacturing plant in the United States has been selected as a world-leading Lighthouse Factory by the World Economic Forum (WEF).

LG Electronics Tennessee Factory is selected as the industry’s first U.S. home appliance Lighthouse Factory

The million-square-foot factory in Clarksville, Tennessee – the U.S. production base for LG’s award-winning washers and dryers – is the industry’s first home appliance plant in the United States to join the WEF’s global network. It also is the company’s second Lighthouse Factory, following on the heels of the LG Smart Park in Changwon, South Korea, which was selected by the WEF last year.

A “Lighthouse Factory” is recognized by the WEF for its role in shaping the future of manufacturing through the integration of Internet of Things (IoT), big data, artificial intelligence (AI), robots and other Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies. Since 2018, the WEF has selected and added global factories to its network twice a year.

AGV(automated guided vehicles) in LG Electronics Tennessee Factory

LG’s world-class autonomous factory in Tennessee, utilizes advanced digital technologies from AI and big data to IoT and robots. Completed at the end of 2018, the facility now operates three production lines for front-load and top-load washing machines and dryers. With an annual production capacity of 1.2 million washers and 600,000 dryers, the plant proactively responds to changing North American demand through local production.  More than 900 people work at the LG home appliance factory in Montgomery County, Tenn.

Featuring a complete integrated production system streamlined process to supply impeccable products to customers on time, each line carries out the entire manufacturing process of new models from making the parts to assembly and packaging. In addition, strict quality conditions are applied to all the assembly lines to heighten quality across the board, from parts to finished products.

Production line at LG Electronics Tennessee Factory

The LG Tennessee factory boasts a fully autonomous logistics system with 166 automated guided vehicles (AGVs) that transport parts around the plant. With three times more AGVs than the LG Smart Park, these robots improve overall productivity by freeing up people for other tasks.

With the integration of parts production such as metal press processing, plastic injection molding, and painting — including LG’s own intelligent injection molding system — the company has increased component productivity by 21 percent.1 In addition, the plant recognizes and responds in advance to potential productivity issues through an advanced detection system. By applying data-based AI technology that accurately predicts washing machine performance, the number of tests and energy consumed during testing are reduced by 22 percent, while the defect rate has been reduced by more than 61 percent via quality optimization.2

The plant is also maximizing workplace safety and operational efficiency by using robots for complicated, potentially dangerous tasks, such as assembling and lifting heavy parts and welding.

To further improve efficiency, LG plans to establish a 5G connectivity network across the facility in the second half of this year, creating an environment where its many AGVs can transport materials faster and more accurately based on stable, uninterrupted communication. LG will also introduce Autonomous Mobile Robots that navigate the expansive facility with ease to enhance its logistics system.

LG’s commitment to sustainability can be seen throughout the Tennessee factory, which transitioned to renewable energy completely already in 2022. The plant also uses a high-efficiency utility infrastructure, which supplies the power, steam and heat necessary to produce LG’s home appliance products with the help of the company’s advanced Building Energy Control (BECON) solution.

“Along with the LG Smart Park, LG’s Tennessee factory represents our unmatched leadership in transforming manufacturing facilities into advanced, futuristic hubs utilizing the most revolutionary technologies,” said Lyu Jae-cheol, president of the LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solution Company. “Lighthouse Factory status exemplifies how LG continues to strive for providing differentiated customer experiences through customized manufacturing innovations.”

CGTN: China protects lives, shares experience in global COVID-19 fight

BEIJING, Jan. 15, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Chinese people are embracing a bustling winter after the country downgraded its COVID-19 management policies.

It’s a breakthrough in the country’s three-year fight against the pandemic, but challenges still lie ahead.

Along the journey, China went all out to protect its people and shared its valuable experience with the world.

Lives protected

China has seen declining numbers of fever patients, emergency visits and critical COVID-19 cases across the country, according to statements at a press conference held by the State Council joint COVID-19 prevention and control mechanism on Saturday.

The number of critical cases in hospitals peaked on January 5 at 128,000, and dropped to 105,000 on January 12, said Jiao Yahui, head of the Bureau of Medical Administration under the National Health Commission (NHC).

To strike a balance between saving lives and ensuring economic activity, China’s COVID-19 policies have bought time in which greater protections have been developed and the virus has become less deadly.

As of January 13, over 661 million confirmed COVID-19 cases and over 6.7 million related deaths had been reported globally, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

China’s death rate per 100,000 people stood at 2.29 as of January 13, according to the WHO, which is 1/37 of the global average and 1/143 of the United States.

The case fatality rate in China was 0.31 percent, far below the 1.01 percent global average and the 1.09 percent of the U.S. as of January 13, data from the WHO showed.

Putting “people first, life first” at the core of COVID-19 policymaking, China owes its low death rate to its strict prevention and control measures in the past three years.

“Based on the global average infection rate, China has prevented about 47.84 million infections and 950,000 deaths,” said Wu Zunyou, chief epidemiologist of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, at a public meeting in November of 2021.

At that time, Wu presented the figures to explain why China had to stick to its dynamic zero policy even though the U.S. and some European countries had relaxed their prevention and control strategies.

If projected using the death rate in the U.S., China has prevented over 3 million deaths, Wu added.

Experience shared

When the outbreak first occurred in 2020, China took strong measures to prevent the virus’ further transmission by shutting exit channels, which created valuable space for the international community to make preparations.

China has been consistently sharing its information on the epidemic. It promptly reported the outbreak to the WHO, shared the genome sequencing results with the world and published its control and treatment protocols. All these moves facilitated COVID-19 prevention and control in the international community, and the research and development of vaccines and testing tools.

In order to share its experience, the country organized over 300 exchange events on epidemic control and medical treatment with over 180 countries and regions and more than 10 international organizations, according to the NHC. In addition, 37 medical teams were sent to 34 countries to help out at the front line.

During the past three years, China has updated 10 pilot editions of COVID-19 diagnosis and treatment protocols. As traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been found to be beneficial in the treatment of the disease, China has held over 100 video exchange and live-streaming events to introduce TCM diagnosis and treatment methods to more than 150 countries and regions.

Medical tools developed

During the precious low-infection window its policies created, China worked against time to develop COVID-19 drugs while promoting vaccination.

Both domestically developed and imported drugs have been approved for emergency use by China’s medical products regulator. More than 10 oral drugs for COVID-19 treatment are being researched and developed in China.

So far, 13 COVID-19 vaccines have been approved by the National Medical Products Administration for conditional marketing or emergency use in China. They can be inhaled or given to people through injection and nasal spray.

To build an immunity barrier against the virus, the Chinese government provided free vaccines for all and continued to improve the vaccination rate. The number of people in China fully vaccinated accounted for over 90 percent of the total population as of mid-December 2022.

Meanwhile, over 4.6 million Chinese citizens living and working in 180 countries have benefited from the “Spring Sprout” vaccine campaign, China’s global campaign to inoculate its nationals living and working abroad, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

China was the first country to announce it would make its COVID-19 vaccine a global public good. It also took the lead in waiving intellectual property rights for COVID-19 vaccines and conducting joint production with developing countries. The country has offered more than 2.2 billion doses of vaccines to over 120 countries and international organizations.

It also provided hundreds of billions of epidemic control materials to 153 countries and 15 international organizations.

PM urges international community to open its eyes and see the crimes Israel commits in the occupied territories

Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh today pleaded with the international community to open its eyes and see the crimes Israel commits on a daily basis in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Speaking at the opening of the weekly cabinet meeting held in Ramallah, Shtayyeh said that the Israeli occupation soldiers and settlers are going to continue their crimes against the Palestinian people in all cities, towns and refugee camps as long as they remain free from accountability and punishment.

He called on whom he referred to as “the protectors of Israel” at the United Nations and international platforms “to open their eyes and hearts and see these crimes committed against our people.”

He criticized the Israeli parliament’s approval of laws of racial discrimination with the aim of perpetuating occupation, annexation, and delegitimizing the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, mentioning, in particular, the racist “emergency law,” which aims at the annexation of the West Bank, as well as a law passed in first reading that calls for revoking citizenship and residency from Palestinian activists in flagrant violation of international conventions and human rights charters.

The Prime Minister also condemned attempts of the new Israeli government to turn over large areas of Palestinian land in the West Bank to settlers and to seize 70 homes and shops in the old city of Hebron, as part of Israel’s aggression against the Palestinian people.

Newspapers Review: Soldiers killing a Palestinian man in cold blood near Ramallah focus of dailies

Israeli soldiers killing a 45-year-old man in cold blood and at point blank near Ramallah yesterday was highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida daily headline said: “The occupation executes a citizen near Silwad, east of Ramallah,” while the headline in al-Ayyam daily said: “This is how the soldiers at the checkpoint executed Ahmad Kahleh.”

The third daily, al-Quds, said in the headline: “A martyr from Ramon near Silwad.”

The papers quoted eyewitnesses saying that soldiers at a flying checkpoint at the entrance to Silwad forced Kahleh to get out of his car and after a quarrel with him, shot him twice in the neck killing him.

Kahleh was going with his son to a nearby town for work when he stopped at the checkpoint. The soldiers threw a stun grenade at his car and entered into an altercation with Kahleh before shooting him at point blank, according to the son, Qusai, 18, who was sprayed with pepper in the face by the soldiers and held for a while before he was released, as reported by al-Ayyam daily.

The dailies also reported on the Israeli army raids of several West Bank towns yesterday and the arrest of many Palestinians.

Al-Ayyam said settlers fenced land in the Jordan Valley to take it over.

Al-Quds said a settler ran over a child east of Qalqilya and that the army informed the family of Mohammad Souf, who was killed by its forces in November following an attack, of the intention to demolish their three-story house in the town of Haris, west of the northern West Bank city of Salfit.

The three dailies said President Mahmoud Abbas traveled to Egypt at the invitation of his Egyptian counterpart for a three-way meeting today with Jordan’s King Abdullah.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida quoted the Chinese foreign minister saying that the historic injustice of the Palestinians should not continue indefinitely.

Al-Quds quoted the Israeli rights group, B’Tselem, saying that Israel imposed measures that paralyzed the health sector in the Gaza Strip and that it controls the suffering of the ill until they die.

It also printed a report by the Chinese news agency quoting Palestinian observers saying that the measures by the new Israeli government will lead to an explosion in the West Bank.

Palestinian farmers in south of West Bank prevented by Israeli soldiers from plowing their lands

Palestinian farmers in the village of Bureen, in the south of the West Bank, were prevented today by Israeli soldiers from plowing their lands, according to a local activist.

Israeli settlers attack shepherds in north of West Bank

Israeli settlers today attacked Palestinian shepherds while herding their sheep in Khirbet Tana in the town of Beit Fourik, east of the northern West Bank city of Nablus, according to a local official.

Ghassan Daghlas, an official who monitors settlement activities, said soldiers were watching when settlers attacked shepherds and did not intervene to stop them, but that they intervened only to protect the settlers after residents rushed to help the shepherds and fend off the settlers’ attack.
