Open Society Foundations Announce 2023 Soros Justice Fellows

New York, Nov. 03, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The Open Society Foundations is pleased to announce the 2023 cohort of Soros Justice Fellows, which includes a mix of emerging and established leaders in the field of criminal justice reform, including public educators, artists, lawyers, activists, non-profit innovators, journalists, and filmmakers from across the United States.

“Over the more than a decade that I have worked with the Soros Justice Fellowships, I’ve seen a great number of fellows go on and continue to serve as changemakers in their local communities, and nationally,” said Adam Culbreath, Senior Team Manager at Open Society–U.S. “This is an incredibly unique program to advance justice in the U.S., which supports the notion that change often happens from the ground up.

“Mass incarceration has an enormous and disastrous toll on our communities and represents one of the most glaring injustices of our nation. Today, nearly 10 million Americans—including millions of children—have an immediate family member in jail or prison,” said Christina Voight, program manager at Open Society–U.S. “Each Soros Justice Fellow can play a role in changing this broken system.”

Each fellow will receive stipends ranging from $100,000 to $140,000 for projects lasting between 12 and 18 months to ensure accountability in the U.S. criminal justice system by developing new ways to combat mass incarceration, youth criminalization, surveillance, immigration policies, racial disparities, and police violence. The Soros Justice Fellowships were founded in 1997 and have funded over 400 individuals working to curb mass incarceration and ensure a fair and equitable system of justice.

HMC Offers Treatment for Patients with Heart Attacks in Record Time, Exceeding International Standards

Hamad Medical Corporations (HMC) Heart Hospital has achieved remarkable success in treating heart attack patients in record time.

The average time from the arrival of a heart attack patient to the emergency department at the Heart Hospital to opening the blocked artery via catheterization is just 46 minutes, surpassing the global standard of 90 minutes for this therapeutic procedure.

Dr. Nidal Asaad, CEO and Medical Director of HMCs Heart Hospital, explained that the prompt medical intervention in managing heart attack cases is crucial in saving patients lives. “The faster we provide treatment after a heart attack, the better the patient’s chances of recovery. Conversely, the longer the time between the occurrence of a heart attack and medical intervention, the higher the likelihood of complications, potentially leading to death,” said Dr. Nidal.

“A heart attack occurs due to a sudden blockage in the blood flow to the heart, resulting in damage or weakening of the heart muscle, rendering it unable to function properly. Upon receiving the patient in the emergency department at the Heart Hospital, a cardiac catheterization is performed for critical and urgent cases requiring rapid intervention, which are transferred to the hospital through the Ambulance Service.

The procedure is performed by our highly trained teams equipped with the necessary expertise and facilities to handle complex cases according to international standards,” explained Dr. Asaad.

“The Heart Hospital offers rapid access to care for cardiac catheterization cases and has one of the best recorded times in this field in medical institutions worldwide.

The ambulance team sends the ECG data to the Heart Hospital, and once the diagnosis is confirmed, the cardiac catheterization team is activated, and the catheterization room is prepared to receive the patient immediately upon arrival. In some of the most complex cases, the catheterization, intensive care, anesthesia, and cardiac surgery teams are all ready and awaiting the patient before his arrival,” added Dr. Asaad.

The multidisciplinary teams dedicated to caring for heart attack patients at HMC provide the safest, most effective, and compassionate healthcare services for these patients.

The team comprises paramedics, cardiologists, practicing physicians, emergency medical service professionals, emergency department team members, radiology professionals, cardiac care ward members, nursing staff specializing in cardiac care, and allied health professionals.

Treatment plans are tailored to each patient’s specific needs. Last year, our teams performed approximately 1,100 emergency cardiac catheterizations for critical and urgent cases requiring rapid intervention. This service continued uninterrupted throughout the COVID-19 pandemic in the past years.

Dr. Omar Al Tamimi, Senior Consultant Cardiologist at HMC’s Heart Hospital, emphasized that heart attacks are among the leading causes of death in Qatar and cautioned about their symptoms, stating: “Symptoms of a heart attack typically include a sharp pain and tightness in the chest, pain in the arms and jaw, and sometimes the upper back, accompanied by shortness of breath and dizziness.

These symptoms can serve as warning signs, with variations depending on the patient’s health, gender, age, and type of heart condition.” Dr. Al Tamimi advised: “If you experience symptoms of a heart attack or are with someone you suspect may be experiencing these symptoms, do not hesitate to call 999 immediately to request an ambulance.” Hamad Medical Corporation has made significant strides in improving the care provided to heart patients in recent years.

The Corporation remains committed to further advancements in this field through public education on the significance of maintaining heart health, raising awareness, and preventing heart attacks by promoting a healthy lifestyle. The aim is to help individuals identify conditions that make them more vulnerable to heart diseases.

Dr. Al Tamimi highlighted chronic conditions and habits that increase the risk of heart attacks, including high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol levels, obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, and smoking. “It is crucial for individuals to ascertain whether their condition falls within the high-risk category for heart problems through regular cardiac examinations.

Diabetes, smoking, high blood pressure, obesity, and inactivity are all factors contributing to heart disease. Adult diabetic patients face a two to four times greater risk of heart problems compared to non-diabetic patients,” said Dr. Al Tamimi.

Dr. Al Tamimi mentioned that making certain lifestyle changes, such as adopting a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and refraining from smoking, can help reduce the risk of developing heart and artery diseases.

Heart diseases are the leading cause of death globally over the past twenty years, especially as the percentage of deaths from heart and vascular diseases is about 33 percent, which accounts for nearly 19 million deaths annually, according to the World Heart Federation.

Arab League Issues Urgent Appeal to UNSC to Stop the Aggression Against Gaza

The League of Arab States sent an urgent appeal to the member states of the UN Security Council (UNSC) to work to stop the Israeli aggression on Gaza Strip immediately and impose a humanitarian truce to bring in the necessary materials in order to save the lives of hundreds of thousands of residents.

In a statement today, Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit said that famine has become a possibility, especially since 1.2 million people in Gaza were already suffering from food insecurity before the recent Israeli aggression on the Strip.

After 17 full years of siege, the entire population today faces the threat of starvation and does not know how to get their next meal, he added.

The majority of the population of the Gaza Strip lives on one liter of water for all purposes, and they sometimes drink from unsanitary wells and do not obtain drinking water, while the average person consumes about 140 liters, the statement said explaining that most of the desalination plants, were destroyed or stopped working due to lack of fuel.

The continuation of Israeli attacks, as well as the aerial bombardment and siege, aggravate the humanitarian situation in Gaza in a horrific way, in what can effectively be described as a war of extermination and ethnic cleansing of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, the statement said.

Furthermore, the statement warned that this situation creates a major health crisis and increases the possibility of transmission of infectious diseases, which is exacerbated by the cessation of service in a number of hospitals and health units, and the collapse of the health sector in Gaza after the generators ran out of fuel, and as a result of it being targeted by the Israeli occupation forces, whose strikes did not spare even ambulances, in a flagrant violation of the most basic laws of war.

The statement noted that the number of trucks entering from the Rafah crossing into the Gaza Strip is still far behind what is required to avoid a humanitarian crisis, noting at the same time that great difficulties face the operations of distributing relief materials and food even after entering the Strip due to the lack of fuel, and as a result of the continued Israeli bombing, which leaves no safe place for the population in Gaza.

Expo Stars League Week 8 Review

The matches of Week 8 of the 2023-2024 season Expo Stars League were full of excitement. A total of 27 goals were scored across the six matches.

The biggest scoring was in the match between Al Gharafa and Al Arabi (nine goals) and the biggest margin of victory was achieved by Al Sadd over Al Markhiya (5-0). Al Sadd and Al Wakrah emerged with clean sheets and the round did not witness any draws.

While the round opened with a five-goal victory for Al Sadd over Al Markhiya, it concluded with a five goals scored by Al Gharafa as against four by Al Arabi in one of the most thrillers of the season, which witnessed nine goals scored and a missed penalty kick in the final seconds for Al Arabi.

The struggle for the lead continued between Al Sadd, who maintained the top spot on goal difference over Al Gharafa who are second-placed, and behind them, Al Wakrah and Al Duhail, who returned to the competitive action strongly under the leadership of their new French coach Christophe Galtier.

Al Shamal achieved their first victory.

The results of Week 8 fixtures saw Al Sadd beat Al Markhiya 5-0; Muaither lose to Umm Salal 1-3; Al Duhail beat Al Rayyan 3-2; Al Wakrah beat Qatar SC 1-0; Al Ahli lose to Al Shamal 1-2 and Al Gharafa beat Al Arabi 5-4.

Al Sadd succeeded in maintaining their top spot in the standings, which they regained two weeks ago by achieving a grand victory over Al Markhiya by five goals. Al Sadd confirmed their superiority from the beginning of the match and scored all five goals in the first half through Baghdad Bounedjah and Akram Afif (who scored a super hat-trick), while Al Markhiya did not perform as expected and suffered the second loss in a row after achieving their first victory over Al Shamal in the sixth week.

Al Sadd increased their points tally to 19 points at the top of the standings and still have a postponed match, while Al Markhiya are still in last place with three points.

Al Gharafa also achieved an exciting 5-4 victory over Al Arabi, in a fiery, heavy-caliber match in which the excitement continued until the final seconds in one of the strongest matches of the season.

With this result, Al Gharafa raised their points to 19 and are in second place in the ranking table, same with Al Sadd, who have the advantage of goal difference and have a postponed match. Al Arabi remained in eighth place with six points after suffering their second loss in a row after the defeat in the last round against Al Ahli.

Al Duhail continued their resurgence by achieving their third victory in a row, after overturning a 0-2 deficit against Al Rayyan to record an exciting 3-2 victory. Al Rayyan were the first to take the lead with two goals through Roger Guedes in the 15th and 41st minutes, but Al Duhail staged a wonderful comeback in the second half, during which they scored three goals.

Al Moez Ali opened the scoring for Al Duhail in the 59th minute from a penalty kick, while Kenyan Michael Olunga added the second and third goals in the 80th and 88th minutes. Al Duhail occupy fourth place after increasing their tally to 16 points, behind Al Wakrah, who are in third place (17 points), while Al Rayyan, who suffered their third defeat this season and the second in a row, remained on 15 points and are in fifth place.

Umm Salal, led by their coach Patrice Carteron, succeeded in turning their loss with a goal in the first half against newcomer Muaither into a valuable victory with a score of 3-1 in the second half, thanks to a wonderful hat-trick scored by their Algerian star Andy Delort.

Umm Salal raised their points to 11 points and are in sixth place after achieving their third victory this season, while Muaither’s remained on four points and are in 11th place after suffering their sixth loss in a row.

Al Wakrah continued their victories and strong performances with an important victory for them, at the expense of Qatar SC, with a clean goal scored by Egyptian midfielder Hamdi Fathi with a shot into the far corner that sealed the three points.

Al Wakrah raised their points to 17 points and are in third place, compared to eight points for Qatar SC, who are in seventh place and suffered their fourth loss this season.

The match witnessed a missed penalty kick by Moroccan Badr Benoun, a Qatar SC player, in the 90th minute, meaning the team wasted the opportunity to equalize and emerge with a point.

Al Shamal succeeded in achieving their first victory this season by defeating Al Ahli and although the first half ended in a 1-1 draw, Al Shamal’s professional Ricardo Gomes gifted his team three valuable points by scoring the winning goal, raising the team’s points to six.
