RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, Oct. 31, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSH&RC) has achieved a significant milestone by successfully conducting liquid biopsies on patients spanning various age groups. This innovative approach offers a safer alternative to conventional tissue biopsies. Notably, KFSH&RC stands out as the first healthcare facility in the Middle East to adopt this cutting-edge technology.

This groundbreaking method is distinguished by its ability to detect approximately 50 genes associated with cancer and over 3,000 genetic mutations. This represents a pivotal advancement in patient care, eliminating the need to extract tissue from the affected area for examination. This transformative step greatly enhances healthcare outcomes and elevates the overall patient experience.

Liquid biopsy offers advantages over traditional tissue biopsies. It’s less invasive, involving a simple 10 ml blood sample that can be repeated during treatment. Additionally, it provides high accuracy in swiftly detecting tumor biomarkers, predicting treatment responses, identifying emerging mutations, and confirming the absence of tumor recurrence, marking a significant advancement in cancer science.

This technology presents a safer alternative to traditional biopsies for patients facing challenges in accessing affected tissue without surgical intervention, as seen in cases like lung cancer. It is particularly beneficial for elderly patients, for whom a lung tissue biopsy may not be suitable due to the potential for severe complications associated with it.

As a strategic health partner at the Global Health Exhibition in Riyadh from October 29 to 31, KFSH&RC will showcase its pavilion in the accompanying exhibition, where visitors can explore Liquid biopsy technology and various other healthcare solutions and technologies.

Liquid biopsy technology holds promise for other stages of cancer treatment at KFSH&RC. Through the routine use of the test, it is possible to build a database of tumor-causing mutations in the local community, which helps in early diagnosis of cancer before tumors form, in addition to tracking changes in the patient’s condition, frequently during treatment, allowing timely adjustments to treatment plans and preventing worsening of the condition.

This achievement is a part of KFSH&RC’s ongoing commitment to harness advanced technologies for enhancing operational excellence and patient care. The test facilitates swift clinical decision-making for cancer patient management and reduces both the testing time and its process through full automation.

KFSH&RC stands as one of the world’s prominent institutions in delivering specialized healthcare, leading the way in innovation, and serving as an advanced hub for medical research and education. Furthermore, it actively endeavors to advance medical technologies and elevate global healthcare standards through collaborations with significant local, regional, and international organizations, aiming to deliver world-class clinical, research, and educational services.

UN report reveals tragic toll of Israeli offensive since October 7

A recent United Nations humanitarian report has shed light on the tragic toll of Israel’s military offensive in Gaza and the occupied West Bank. Since the start of hostilities on the 7th of October, the report revealed that an estimated 4,830 Palestinian children have lost their lives. The report, which cites data from the Gaza Ministry of Health, also indicated that the total number of Palestinian deaths stands at 8,309, encompassing 3,747 children and 2,062 women. An additional 21,048 individuals have sustained injuries as a result of the ongoing conflict. An alarming statistic within the report is the approximately 1,950 individuals, including 1,050 children, who are reported as missing, either trapped under the rubble of collapsed structures or having met a tragic end. Significantly, the Gaza Ministry of Health’s data underscored that more than two-thirds of these deaths occurred within the confines of their own homes, emphasizing the severe humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region. In a related context, the report highlighted the dire situation in the West Bank. Between the afternoon of October 29 and 9 p.m. yesterday, Israeli forces claimed the lives of six Palestinians, with an additional Palestinian killed by an Israeli settler. This brings the total number of Palestinians who have lost their lives due to Israeli forces or settlers since October 7 to a distressing 121, of whom 33 are children.

Palestinian Health Ministry in Ramallah receives 6 Jordanian aid trucks

Trucks carrying medicines, equipment, and medical supplies from Jordan arrived Tuesday evening at the Palestinian Ministry of Health warehouses in Ramallah. Under His Majesty King Abdullah’s orders, Jordan dispatched six trucks loaded with medicines, equipment, and medical supplies to Palestine via the Karama crossing earlier today. The aid was received in the Ministry of Health’s warehouses in the presence of Jordan’s ambassador to Ramallah, Issam Al-Bdour, according to Palestinian Health Minister Mai Alkaila. She said that the aid was sent as per instructions of His Majesty King Abdullah to support the Palestinian health sector. She also noted that similar aid arrived at Al-Arish Airport to help the Gaza Strip. She added that the Gaza Strip is the most in need of assistance, but the Ministry of Health is implementing an emergency plan in the West Bank that was agreed upon by the Council of Ministers yesterday, in addition to assisting the Gaza Strip’s health sector first. Alkaila affirmed that the Palestinian Ministry of Health is presently striving to support the Gaza health sector, which had previously declared a state of emergency owing to a scarcity of medicines, medical supplies, and fuel. She mentioned the psychological state of the medical personnel as well as the fact that the aid stimulates Gaza’s health sector’s recovery, which is one of the Ministry’s top priorities in light of the massacres taking place there. “Within the framework of local and international efforts, an agreement was made to enable 100 trucks to enter daily, despite the fact that 500 trucks entered daily from the Rafah crossing, in addition to trucks from Beit Hanoun (Erez) in normal circumstances,” Alkaila said. “Given the atrocities and the destruction of the Strip’s infrastructure, Gaza needs to receive as much food, medical care, and other humanitarian supplies as possible.” She stated that the occupation has made no response to the entry of fuel into the Gaza Strip. Given that 15 hospitals remain closed and that the remaining hospitals in the Gaza Strip face the possibility of closing due to either direct targeting or fuel shortages, she urged the international community to exert pressure for the entry of fuel into the region. Hospitals cannot function without fuel, and their inability to do so would be catastrophic for the injured given the daily massacres. According to Al-Bdour, the aid was provided in accordance with His Majesty the King’s directions and in cooperation between the Jordanian and Palestinian governments, with the goal of continuing to give support in all forms to the West Bank. He stated that the first convoy consisted of six trucks carrying medical supplies and medications, and that further vehicles and aid would follow. He added that there is aid that was previously sent to the Gaza Strip and is currently at Al-Arish Airport waiting to be released in the near future and brought into the Strip to provide relief to citizens and meet their urgent humanitarian and life needs. He stressed that Jordan is seeking, by all available means, and in full coordination with its brothers and partners, the United Nations and international humanitarian organizations working, in order to exert pressure to facilitate the entry of aid to meet the needs of citizens in the Gaza Strip.

Israeli massacre in Jabalia killed, injured more than 400, says Indonesian hospital director

The early count of fatalities and injuries in the Israeli occupation attack on the Jabalia camp surpassed 400, according to the director of the Indonesian hospital in Gaza, Dr. Atef Al-Kahlout. Speaking to a press conference on Tuesday, Al-Kahlout said Civil Defense personnel are still searching for missing persons and conducting recovery operations from under the rubble, despite their simple and limited capabilities. He noted that the majority of the dead and injured had burns and severe wounds, which suggested the employment of modern weapons. He also mentioned that the hospital would be shut down tomorrow night due to a fuel shortage. Al-Kahlout urged for the Rafah crossing to be opened in order to bring in aid and evacuate the injured. In addition, Al Jazeera channel announced that 18 family members of its broadcast engineer in Gaza, Mohammad Abu Al-Qumsan, have been killed in the Jabalia massacre.

UN Security Council listens to briefings by UN officials on the escalation of Israel in Gaza

Baghdad, -The Security Council discussed at dawn, today, Tuesday, at an Arab request, the escalation of the Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip and the continuation of its aggression against civilians and the humanitarian sectors, and listened to UN officials about the current situation in the Middle East.

The Council listened to briefings from the United Nations and its agencies, which highlighted the seriousness of the situation and the needs and suffering of the population due to the bombing and aggression that led to their killing and displacement, and the demolition of the infrastructure of the Gaza Strip and the buildings belonging to humanitarian organizations.

Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), said “The continuous bombing by the Israeli forces on the Gaza Strip is shocking, and that the level of destruction is unprecedented,” stressing that “there is no safe place in Gaza.”

He touched on the evacuation orders issued by the occupation forces to civilians to head south, and described what happened and is still happening as “forced displacement,” noting that the agency is the last remaining lifeline for the Palestinians in Gaza.

Lazzarini stated that he lost 64 of his fellow UNRWA workers in Gaza during the past three weeks, speaking about the depletion of fuel, water, food and medicine, and that the system used to allow relief into Gaza will fail if the political will is not available to make the flow of supplies feasible and proportionate to the unprecedented humanitarian needs. “

Lazzarini stressed the need to strictly comply with international humanitarian law, and ensure the safe and unhindered flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza, and called for funding UNRWA to enable it to continue its humanitarian operations.
