Death Toll from Floods in Northern India Rises to 65

The death toll from floods and landslides caused by monsoon rains in parts of northern India, especially the states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, has risen to 65.

Himachal Pradesh state chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu told local media on Tuesday that 11 people were died in the collapse of a temple in state capital Shimla, adding that the strong waters destroyed bridges and buildings, washed away vehicles and caused great damage.

Sukhvinder explained that climatic fluctuations have caused since Sunday the death of at least 52 people, calling on residents to stay in their homes and stay away from the course of rivers especially since the authorities are making relief efforts for those affected and stuck in their homes while schools are still closed, expressing his fear that there are 20 other persons under the rubble.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in remarks that national authorities and local authorities would work together to help those affected and to rebuild and rehabilitate damaged facilities.
