Foreign Ministry welcomes African Union suspension of Israel’s observer status

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates today welcomed the decision of the African Union to suspend the decision to grant Israel, the occupying state, observer status in the Union and considered it a victory for the Palestinian cause, the just rights of the Palestinian people and the free will of the African peoples.

It also considered it in a statement as another step on the path to pressure Israel to end its occupation of Palestinian land and stop its continuous violations of the right of the Palestinian people, and an explicit call for it to comply with the United Nations resolutions.

The Ministry thanked the African Union member states and their leaders for standing by the Palestinian right, foremost Algeria, South Africa, and Nigeria, and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries for their role in refusing to grant Israel the observer status.

It expressed pride in the great historical relations between the Palestinian people and the peoples of the African continent, which have always stood by the cause and rights of the Palestinian people, foremost of which is their right to self-determination and liberation from occupation, settlement, and the Israeli apartheid regime.
