RAMALLAH– The Israeli army killing of a Palestinian in Hebron yesterday was highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today.
They said Ahmad Atrash, 29, was shot and killed in the center of Hebron with al-Ayyam daily quoting witnesses saying that a soldier opened direct fire at Atrash, fatally injuring him.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida daily said Atrash had previously served time in Israeli prisons for resisting the occupation.
The third daily, al-Quds, said that dozens of Palestinians were injured yesterday when the Israeli army opened fire at protests that raged throughout the occupied territories following the Friday prayers.
Al-Quds said in a report from Beirut that as Lebanon prepares to host a meeting for the advisory board for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) on June 16, there exists a western plan to end UNRWA operations and re-settle the Palestinian refugees.
It also said 45,000 Muslims attended the Friday prayer at Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, while al-Ayyam put the figure at more than 35,000.
The papers said that the fast month of Ramadan was confirmed to start today, Saturday, in Palestine.
Al-Quds daily quoted the Israeli transportation minister saying that Israel plans to build a railway system and roads that connect the settlements in the center of the West Bank and the Jordan Valley with the industrial areas of Atarot in occupied East Jerusalem and Modain settlement.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida said the UN Human Rights Council adopted two resolutions in favor of Palestine, one on the right to self-determination for the Palestinian people and the other on the illegality of the Israeli settlements in the occupied territories.
It also said the foreign ministry welcomed the appointment of Francesca P. Albanese, from Italy, as a new Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967 replacing the outgoing Canadian Rapporteur Michael Lynk.
Al-Ayyam said dozens of Palestinians and supporters participated in a protest against evicting Palestinians from their homes in Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of occupied East Jerusalem for the benefit of Jewish settlers.
