Newspapers review: Prisoners’ houses demolitions, Russia-Ukraine war focus of dailies

The Israeli punitive demolition of the family houses of two Palestinian prisoners in the northern West Bank district of Jenin and the Russia-Ukraine war hit the front headlines in today’s Palestinian Arabic dailies.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported violent confrontations and injuries as Palestinians confronted Israeli forces as the latter blew up the houses of the families of two prisoners in Silat al-Harithiya town, west of Jenin.

Al-Ayyam printed a photo showing Palestinians inspecting the debris of the two houses in the town.

Al-Quds added that Israeli forces tore down the family houses of the prisoners in addition to five structures in the West Bank.

Al-Quds opted to highlight the ongoing Russian-Ukraine war in its main front-page news item.

It said that on the 13th day of the war, Russian forces were approaching Kyiv and completely control six main Ukrainian cities.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said that Russian forces were edging closer to Kyiv as bombardment continues.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Ayyam added in this regard that US President Joe Biden banned Russian oil imports to the US.

Moreover, the dailies spotlighted the funeral procession of Yamen Jaffal in the Jerusalem-district town of Abu Dis and that of Omar Abu Assab in Jerusalem.

Al-Ayyam added that Israeli occupation authorities imposed restrictions on the funeral procession of Abu Assab.

Jaffal, 16, was gunned down by Israeli forces who raided the town on Sunday. Abu Assab, 16, was killed for allegedly stabbing two police officers in occupied East Jerusalem in November of last year.

The dailies reported UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Tor Wennesland, expressing deep concern over the deteriorating security situation in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said that Israeli settlers set up a new colonial outpost on the lands of Qaryout village, southeast of Nablus.

Al-Ayyam reported the Israeli human rights organization B’Tselem refuting Israeli military allegations on the killing of Muhammad Abbas in Amari refugee camp in Ramallah.

Al-Ayyam printed an investigation revealing that the US field hospital in northern Gaza was dismantled without providing any medical services to the population.

It said that the Israeli government asked the court for more time to decide on whether or not to demolish and displace Palestinians in Khan al-Ahmar community east of Jerusalem.

The Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ministry was reported in al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida stating that it has evacuated members of the Palestinian community from the Ukrainian city of Sumy.

The dailies said that 465 Palestinians tested positive for Covid-19 while five have died of it in the occupied territories.

Premier Mohammad Shtayyeh was reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida pledging that the government would proceed with the approval of all legislation and laws that offer justice to women and grant them their rights.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported the UK government saying that it continues to urge Israel to cease forced “evictions” and demolitions in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah.

Al-Quds spotlighted a women’s protest in Jerusalem in solidarity with female prisoners in Israeli custody.

Regionally, al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said that Jordan’s Prince Hamza apologizes to the king for his plot ‘mistake’.
